Bielema, who led to the Razorbacks to a 7-6 season and their first bowl game in three seasons last year, will also receive a raise from his previous $3.2 million salary — making an average of $4.25 million annually over the six-year deal. He'll make $4 million this year with annual raises of $100,000 after that, culminating with a base salary of $4.5 million in 2020.
The new contract also raises his buyout, if he were to leave Arkansas, from $2 million to $4 million in 2015. The buyout decreases by $1 million annually through 2018 and is $500,000 in 2019 and $250,000 in 2020.
If the school fires Bielema over the next three years, it would owe him $15.4 million.
Not bad for being 2-14 in conference

Saban had won a national title and two SEC titles to get 8 years and 32 million in 2007. Wow. Just wow. Bret is going to do solid things at Arkansas, maybe even a SEC title or two. But after 3-9 and 7-6, he's still bargaining with those Rose Bowls he lost.

Probably should have held off one more year to be sure.

Arky did improve. I will not deny that. However, you can't get past the fact he has 2 conference wins. That gets a coach on the hot seat and possibly fired at other schools. Instead, Arkansas throws him a fat raise and extension. I don't see how they can justify this move with the current circumstances.
If they had waited a year, and if Arkansas had success to some degree, I would understand it.

Ouch. That's the part that I'd worry about - the AD has hitched its wagon to Bert for the next 3 years come hell or high water. I think he's finally turning things around there, well at least starting to, but it's a pretty big gamble to base a contract on the data that's in and a gut feeling. That buyout clause is too much.

Only in coaching and politics do you get rewarded for mediocrity.
Not directing this at Bert by the way, just coaching and politics in general.
