I hate the stupid magic crap they force upon you. I think the first was much better, it's a roguelike, i should be able to play a variety of different ways.
I really don't understand this as I have closing in on 40 hours at this point, and I definitely see tremendous build variety. Arguably even more than the 1st one
The magic stuff is just charged versions of what you already had with a resource. That kind of stuff adds to build variety.

cheaters will find and share a loophole in this system and be back to playing within hours. it’s what they do. it’s what they enjoy. the actual cheating is just their victory lap.
While true, severe barriers mitigate their ability to actively cheat. The reason they're back to cheating so quickly is they just make a new account and grab the game again. All you need for that is a throwaway email and maybe some money since free games are a thing.

Having to go through an ID verification is a much more complex layer since I assume any implementation of this is checking that the person entered is actually real. So they would need another person's information, but using that enters the world of fraud. Actual legal trouble could pop up at that point (in theory anyway).

Cheating in video games to my knowledge has never had a barrier remotely close to that in the west.
That hardcore difficulty is something I'll consider down the road when the itch hits again. I'll likely do spear finally for that run.

As for min-maxing the gear in Nioh, it's fun but I found it largely irrelevant at the end of the day because the stat bonuses are so small relative to the damage going on, it doesn't make much of a real difference. You are either good at the combat in which case your gear largely doesn't matter, or you're bad at the combat in which case your gear largely doesn't matter.
Just for context, but in base game the gear basically is bigger base number and go.
As you go through the NG cycles, you have to start getting picky heavily since maintaining a proper gear set becomes critical. Not just due to numbers but also due to new mechanics etc in the NG cycles.

Pretty much all of your complaints are things I enjoy about the series
Right there with ya

HOLY shite NIOH 3 ANNOUNCED!!!! Demo (PS5 only) out now too!!!
I'm so excited for it man
Been enjoying it decently well so far. I like the emphasis on boss weakness since it is an actual mechanic interaction usually rather than just pure bonus damage.
Also glad they finally have the talismans showing numbers (although some could still be more detailed). Too bad that in the same game weapons don't have more indepth item details in a run so you can check scaling  FromSoft QoL continues to be the monkey's paw.

The character mechanics so far feel pretty good and thought out. I hope they bring a lot of the gameplay concepts forward into future titles since these abilities really help spice up the combat.
From what I'm seeing, it's not as simple as just kill XYZ. It's more about hitting specific points of interest with a thought out strategy behind it since you get various passives, chunks of runes, and other rewards. Lot of hauling arse and knowledge of various abilities will go a long way. I can tell this is going to be an incredibly polarizing game, but it appeals to me a little more due to the extra abilities creating some degree of meaningful strategy along with the roguelike build on the fly with co-op.

If people can’t spot some of the obvious flaws of the current AAA landscape, they are willfully ignorant.
And that's the crux of it. AAA gaming is in a bad spot, but the rest of gaming has largely been fine for its history. To go further with that, I would argue that old triple AAA in terms of size/scope/etc was actually more comparable to current AA. In a way, this current AAA is a weird anomaly in gaming that doesn't really have a predecessor i.e. company that got insanely too big and lost track of the original point which is to make fun games.

All of that is why I don't really buy into the idea that gaming is in shambles. This has been my main hobby since I was little, and I'm still finding fantastic titles every year that I haven't touched yet.
The fighting game genre has been enjoying a golden age in recent years with regard to its multiplayer status as an example of something that has been doing great.
Sounds like your awareness of great games out there is quite limited in my opinion. There is a lot, and I mean a lot if you're willing to explore and branch out.
I really don't care much if a dev adds difficulty settings. As long as the normal intended option is present as usual, it doesn't bother me. Also as long as the higher diffculty settings are fun rather than tedious. If anything, I find it incredibly bizarre when the From fan base (the usual culprit here unfortunately) gets really up in arms over it. I personally find the souls games too easy, but that's a consequence of no settings for difficulty as well.

would you rather them live in the hood?
Nope. Neither are good answers. Is there not a reasonable middle ground? I ask genuinely as I see a problem, but I do not pretend to be knowledgeable enough to know the answer. I don't expect anyone here to know the answer either frankly

yes, it sucks but people do it all the time in big cities, in order to live in an affordable home.

And I've seen it take a toll on them and their families. Is that acceptable?

wow...the horror!
You say this but a 1 hour commute is a large ordeal for anyone.
Assuming my schedule of 9s, I'm effectively adding 2 hours to my workday in that scenario. I'm pulling 11s at that point due to commute time. If I want to also have a healthy lifestyle and hit the gym, I'm adding at least 30, closer to 45 mins on top of that. Tack on shower and something simple like a small meal and we can round it to an hour. I've hit 12 hours of the day and I haven't even factored sleep into this yet.

I haven't even touched numbers for basic chores, grocery runs, a social life, entertainment life to just unwind, and other things that will all be competing for a very small chunk of hours you have left before you need to hit the hay. All of these are also very tight estimates assuming nothing pushes those numbers at all.

I have it great right now where my commute is incredibly small, and I've seen the effects of larger commutes on people. It's not a small deal like you seem to think. I intend to move from my apartment into my own home in the future, and a commute >30 mins is out of the question if I can help it. It doesn't have to be 5 minutes, but I really don't want to bring 8+ hours of my life being stuck in the car into my life on a weekly basis.
DLC update to release on May 15th according to what I read earlier. It doesn't seem to be purely new content like new areas as much as it is boss rushes, QoL, balance tweaks, and a new difficulty I think.
I've grown very tired of current From combat due to lack of depth, but that overview trailer showed some glimpses that they might be finally adding to the combat in some ways. Still cautious about it, but I'm more curious now at least.
I know all that cause I find the games easy  The inherent problem imo is that the entire game centers around dodge R1 on repeat as an optimal answer the overwhelming majority of the time with no emphasis on a balance of aggression and defensiveness. It only punishes aggressiveness and encourages you to play passively.

I am someone who wants to weave in and out of the insanity and blow up the enemy, but with execution required of me i.e. I screw up I get punished, but I am rewarded for being good. From games just don't provide that.

I can clear a boss in a From game in record time by being turbo aggressive, sure, but I am not actually rewarded in anyway besides saving a smidge of time.

Other games you have to balance it out because of regenerating stamina etc that bosses have.

As for the movesets, when I realized that the majority of weapons have the exact same moveset, that really hit hard for any enjoyment in variety of weapons. I can use basically the entire list besides some oddball weapons with optimal efficiency because they behave the same.
quote:

elden ring combat is perfection, honestly just go caster if you struggle a lot with the dodge rolling
Man, I don't want to derail this thread, but I find from's combat flow to be so tedious and uninteresting lol It's just dodge R1 for everything in the series with no variation for >95% of it
Finished the base game last night.
Man, what a finale sequence! I have really enjoyed this game, and now I'm on to NG+ and intend to run greatsword eventually to try it out.

For me, GOTY so far. We'll see if it keeps that naturally.
A bit less complicated than Nioh, but still a decent number of similarities. Both Khazan and Nioh have a solid emphasis on a lot of player tools that give you a lot of potential power, but you have to be good with them. If you're on point, you can thrash enemies, but if you're not, you know how this ends
The combat depth is one of the main highlight points basically.
They both have noteworthy buildcrafting although Nioh gets even deeper, but Khazan's is good so far.

I don't know how much depth there is to the NG+ content in Khazan, but Nioh is well known for having a very in depth NG+ cycle with new mechanics, different enemy behaviors, and a wide variety of other things that are, in my opinion, the benchmark for an excellent NG+ cycle. I'll find out soon enough if Khazan does that or not.
