Does defense still win championships?

Watching all four playoff games this year, I am not so sure.

At some point, you do need to stop the other team.
Alabama and MSU beat us because their defenses were better in the red zone.
UGA whipped us with a great running game and good defense.
Texas A&M used turnovers and a blocked FG with an excellent passing game to beat us.
Wiscy got a stop in OT.
So in all of our losses, some form of defense made a difference.

I agree with these points, but I think the days of only scoring 21 and winning a championship are gone now.

I think Ohio State's defense, and the lack of Oregon's, was the key to that game. I think the telling stat is not the yards given up by tOSU's defense, but the conversions rate. Oregon went 2-12 on third down and 0-2 on fourth down. Also, their defense held Oregon in the redzone. I believe Oregon only scored one TD in four trips to the redzone.
Hell, Ohio State gave up 4 turnovers and still won 42-20, even though the last TD didn't really matter.

Also held Bama to only 3-12 on 3rd downs

I was about to point this out as well. OSU's defense won that game.

No. You still need a championship defense, but I think the days of winning with an offense that's only 3 yards and a cloud of dust are over. You have to have a dynamic offense.

The problem with the adage of "defense wins championships" is someone takes it to the extreme and neglects the offense. Neither aspect of the team can suck. A minimum of decent is required, and the other aspect balances by being elite etc.
AU 2010 is a good example. Elite offense, above avg. to good defense with good playmakers.

this will hold true for as long as football is played.
the only exception is when bama wins. the years that bama wins is bc they did a better job at not beating themselves

surprised to say this, but I argue ohio state won because of their defense.

I am not really sure, but this year has me thinking about it a lot.
I know it can be misleading but I took a quick glance at total offense and total defense
Offense Ranking Defense Ranking
AL 17 12
FL St 35 61
Ore 3 87
Ohio 9 19
I do think you need a dynamic offense these days. OF course, you also have to possess a defense good enough to make key stops, but I tend to agree the 3 yards and a cloud of dust is probably not enough to get you there anymore.

When it's good, yes. That's why Oregon lost... Ohio state doesn't have the best defense in the country but it was the difference in the NCG.

Again, I posted this to get other's opinions because I am not so sure anymore. I agree about the Ohio State Defense, but looking at total offense and defense (i know these stats can sometimes be misleading) they were the most balanced of the teams playing.

A team that has a great defense/special teams with an average offense will win 9/10 over a team with a great offense and average defense/special teams.
ETA: I should say defense AND special teams. That's what's often overlooked in this. A team that plays great defense generally plays great special teams as well.

I agree. The college game, like the NFL, is becoming a more wide open game. You need a good D, but not a great D any more. This "O puts butts in the seat but D wins championships" mentality doesn't hold water any more.

I disagree. The reason tOSU won was because they converted some HUGE third downs on O. Oregons O shot itself in the foot on crucial third down plays as much as it was tOSU stopping them.
