I disagree. The reason tOSU won was because they converted some HUGE third downs on O. Oregons O shot itself in the foot on crucial third down plays as much as it was tOSU stopping them.
This seemed to be a recurring theme for a lot of teams this year. It seemed like most teams suffered from third and Chavis.

Yes. Ohio State's defense shutting down Oregon's offense won the game.

Ohio state wouldn't have had as much success @ 3rd downs if Oregon had a defense.

You can't depend on your Offense to outscore teams rvery single game..... Sooner or later the defense has to make some stops.

Yeah, I see that. I am just curious to see how it goes over the next few years. I just do not see many game of the century scores of 6-9 in the future.

Can anyone name one team with a bad defense that has ever won a championship?

tOSU just made plays, specifically the QB. Oregon's DL wore out as the game went on because of lack of depth, but tOSU O, making clutch plays, is what won that game.
In 2010, Auburn's D did not win us a NC.....not even close.
In 2013 Auburn's D did not get us that close to winning a NC...........not even close. FSU's D certainly didn't win it for them either.

2010 Auburn. We made every, and I mean every, team look like they had a Heisman candidate at QB.

Held Oregon's high powered offense to 20 points.

That brings up another interesting point. In the past you had what, almost a month off before the game. I would think having the games closer together will help keep offenses in the groove instead of starting out looking rusty as they have in the past.

I think you need a defense that can generally stop the run (which usually translates to good red zone D) and is good on third down.
2010 AU is my example.

Exactly, good defenses beat good offenses. Offenses can no longer line up and go toe to toe with a defense. They have to spread, go quick and throw it around to gain the slightest advantage. Defense has to get off the field and good ones do.

I agree with these points, but I think the days of only scoring 21 and winning a championship are gone now.
The benchmark for what qualifies as good defense has changed, but it is still the determining factor.
Ohio State's vastly superior defense was the reason they could overcome 4 turnovers and still beat Oregon comfortably.

Does defense still win championships?
Watching all four playoff games this year, I am not so sure.
Good question and, as things stand right now, I'm not so sure either. Currently, I'd say you need a great offense and a "good enough" defense to win championships...
In the past few years, the spread/HUNH offense has changed things. It was built to better compete against more physical/dominating defenses and I'd say the spread has the upper hand right now. I think it'll take some innovation on the defensive side of the ball, something we haven't seen in quite a while, to even things out. Just as defenses evolved to counter the glut of option offenses that came about in the late 60's/70's, eventually there'll be an answer to the spread/HUNH as well...but how long that will take is anyone's guess...

I was about to point this out as well. OSU's defense won that game.
No doubt, especially considering how many times OSU's offensive turnovers left their defense shouldering the load. Add a solid running game behind a physical OL and it's the same formula that's worked for the SEC these past several years.

Are you fricking kidding me?
tOSU stymied two of the most potent offense in the country and won both their games DESPITE having 4+ turnovers. That's defense.
