Teams Claiming More National Championships Than They Should (Updated OP)

I saw an Aggie on a different board stating that A&M has 3 national championships. A poster questioned them, so I went back and looked myself. It appears that of their 3 National Championships they claim:
1919 - 2 out of 15 publications named them the National Champion
1927 - 1 out of 10 publications named them the National Champion
1939 - Seems legit because 12 out of 15 publications named them the National Champion
I guess a bunch of SEC teams outside of LSU do this, since we don't claim 1908, 1935 and 1936. This just seems weak and pathetic to me. I know Bama is known for it, but it appears others like A&M are guilty as well.
Maybe somebody with more time can go back and show how many a school claims compared to how many they should claim. I can update this post. (If I get some time throughout the day, I will update myself)
SEC Schools and National Championships:
Texas A&M - Claims 3 - Should Claim 1 (1939)
LSU - Claims 3 - Should Claim 3 (1958, 2003, 2007)
Ole Miss - Claims 3 - Should Claim 1 (1960)
Mississippi St - 0 - 0
Georgia - Claims 5 - Should Claim 2 (1942, 1980)
Tennessee - Claims 6 - Should Claim 3 (1938,1951,1998)
Florida - Claims 3 - Should Claim 3 (19996,2006,2008)
Kentucky - Claims 1 - Should Claim 0
Arkansas - Claims 1 - Should Claim 1 (1964)
Mizzou - 0 - 0
Vanderbilt - 0 - 0
South Carolina - 0 - 0
Auburn - Claims 2 - Should Claim 2 (1957,2010)
Alabama - Claims 15 - Should Claim 10 (1925, 1926, 1961, 1965, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, 2012)
Therefore the rankings of Teams by Championships they should claim is:
1. Alabama - 10
2. LSU - 3
2. Tennessee - 3
2. Florida - 3
5. Georgia - 2
5. Auburn - 2
7. Ole Miss - 1
7. Arkansas - 1
7. Texas A&M - 1
10. Vandy - 0
10. Miss St - 0
10. Mizzou - 0

Seems extremely Aggie focused when there are plenty of examples from other schools.
Something on your mind?

I applaud you for starting this thread and not once mentioning Ole Miss.

Motherfricker, we have 2 days till football seasons starts and you come in here posting some weak shite like that.

We should just change the standard to "modern national titles" and ignore anything before 1950.

Alabama - Claims 15 - Should Claim 14
No way we can justify 1941. All others were awarded under the system in place at the time..

Really all depends, different eras had different types of championships, kind of like the nfl before the super bowl, I guess it is really up to what you want to claim for a certain era, in modern day cfb I personally only count the BCS Era

Post 1936, only AP or Coaches/BCS or CFB playoff count.

pre wire service nattys are always a bit ambiguous, but bama has 4 undefeated teams that went to the rose bowl. they put southern football on the map, not sure why they count 1941 (dumbest natty to be claimed in the history of nattys) but bama with 14 nattys is legit as it gets. they have 10 modern poll era wire service national titles (ap, coaches)
i dont know why atm counts things the way they do, pretty amazing.
we could actually claim 1908 since we were the majority vote getter, but yeah, unless a team is the majority recipient from the natty services prior to 1936, then they shouldnt count em.
ole miss got screwed pretty bad in the early 60s. i dont blame em for counting 1960 and 62. they cant count 1959, they fd that up themselves, but unfortunately, because they were already int he wire service era and didnt get any wire service nattys, ole miss has officially zero national titles.

Eh, there was real football being played in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Now teams from the 30s and 40s centered around a couple of athletes who may not start for a big high school program in the modern era are totally different.
Basically, if there are still occasional dispute about the facts of the games/seasons, because there are mediocre records or reporting of the events, it shouldn't count as much.

Has no comment on auburn's claims, but he's right on top of the first statement by a Bama fan.

There is a distinction to be made between "claimed national titles" and "awarded national titles".
In my opinion a school should only recognize titles awarded contemporaneously by well respected, nationally relevant organizations. Otherwise they come off as looking cheap and desperate.
