What Killed Ole Miss Football?

So at one point, Ole Miss was this really awesome national titles winning program. Top rival of LSU.
And today not so much.
For other fallen powers like Minnesota, Illinois or Pitt I know the story, but what happened to Ole Miss that they got to the point where the party before the game mattered more than the game?
It is not a hook because I am serious. I would hide a hook.
Thank you in advance for your response.

Integration. And that's not even meant to be a joke. The reason I hate on Vaught a little bit is because he didn't recruit black players.

I think the " racism" thing puts a halt on our football program.
Even though Alabama had just as bad/ if not worse race issues. But we have the grove... Which beats the shite out of anywhere else as a fan.

How awesome would it be if Mississippi only had one large University in the state and that was in the SEC? How different would things be and how good would their history have been?
Kinda like how LSU has the state to its self.

Thank you for the serious response, I appreciate it.
That is also what my grandad, a 86 year old Ole Miss fan says. But I didn't want to just take his word about a racial issue.

I think such a program would be pretty awesome in theory. So many JuCos in that state....

He would have had an easier time if the University of Mississippi kept their original mascot, Flood, instead of changing to the Rebels and having a plantation owner as as a mascot.
Waving Confederate flags well into the 90s didn't help either.

While integration definitely had an effect on Ole Miss' program , there are other factors that should be noted. A facilities armsrace started in the SEC in the 1970's . Ole Miss fell way way behind. We didn't even gets lights at VHS until the late 1980's.

Interdasting, I didn't know about these guys:
So I don't have to make a new thread:
Why didn't they go back to Flood instead of bears or landsharks?

Only in the last decade and change have we really started pouring money into facilities. We wasted a good 2 decades.

Yep. We played most of our SEC games at Memorial Stadium in Jackson until the early 1990's. We played LSU in Oxford in 1989, the first time it had been played there since the early 1960's. THANK GOD for Jackie Sherrill (can't believe I'm saying that). as he was instrumental in causing both schools to start playing more games in Starkville and Oxford. He was instrumental in moving the Egg Bowl back to Starkville in the early 1990's when it was State's turn to host. Ole Miss, of course, then had to move the Egg Bowl back to Oxford when it was out turn to host. All of this led to multiple improvements at Vaught Hemingway and abandoning Jackson all together.
