I still have one of the battle M flags. I think they're pretty cool

And this is my favorite picture involving the battle M flag

This has been an informative and interesting thread.
Minus the race stuff, OM's fall from football grace reads a lot like Missouri's does.
Shitty facilities. Check.
Crappy admins. Check.
Dumb coaching hires. Check.
OM was probably more of a football power than Mizzou was back in the day, I wasn't around then to say one way or the other. However, our dark days sound eerily similar to your dark days.

No probably about it, bud.
I like to believe our fall from grace is due to the split resources, but the ineffective leadership is the real key.

Apparently it's cyclical. Either that or Croom and Orgeron sucked mad dick.

you can point to an exact, single event that was the major downfall of Ole Miss football.
That was when Vaught named his successor in Bob Tyler....Ole Miss chose to go with their buddy, Bruiser Kinard. Tyler ended up a few years later at MSU where he won a division title.
Wow I have never heard that story, thanks.
Also thanks for the thread recap Tornado Alley!

Freshmen year was 1996 and you didn't go to a home game without having 2 little confederate flags - one for you and one for your date. At the time, it just seemed normal. Looking back, idiotic as it gets. After Tubs called for it to quit, for a while we replaced those flags with a red flag with a navy block M with stars in it, just like the confederate flag almost. Crazy stupid.
I'm guessing shakers have replaced the letter M flags?

Yes. And because we banned sticks in VHS to discourage Confederate flags inside the stadium, we have Pom poms with credit card sized holders. I don't think anyone else in America does this. I actually prefer it over a stick because it easily fits in the back pocket in my J.Crew slacks that I wear to games.

I think Alabama & Auburn have the same issue.

I always chew the plastic holder piece down to a nub because our team stresses me out so bad.

My dad was on the outs with Ole Miss for a number of years. He and a number of other former Vaught players went to the school in the late 60's to tell them that they needed to get ahead of the curve on desegregation of the football team. Their stance was that signing really good black football players was the easiest way for the Ole Miss family to accept the fact that desegregation was inevitable.
The school basically told them to go away and don't let the door hit them on the way out. I think he didn't attend a single Ole Miss game or alumni event for the next 20 years or so.

If you pregame the right way in the Grove, you should never get nervous.

So you're telling me I shouldn't get nervous after consuming, likely, at least two bloody marys, a couple of beers, and a copious amount of bourbon?
I don't think you're watching the game correctly.

He finished rank in his final five seasons at UK?
1946 = 7 wins overall and 2 in SEC
1947 = 8 wins overall and 2 in SEC
1948 = 5 wins overall and 1 in SEC
1949 = 9 wins overall and 4 in SEC
1950 = 11 wins overall and 5 in SEC(including the shocking win of OU)
1951 = 8 wins overall and 3 in SEC
1952 = 5 wins overall and 1 in SEC
1953 = 7 wins overall and 4 in SEC
Pretty sure he never beat the Vols in 8 seasons @ UK
While he had some winning seasons, it was enabled by OOC wins and not conference wins. Only 3 of 8 seasons with 4 or 5 conference wins and never when 6-0 or 7-0 in SEC play.
With only 1 SEC win in 1952 his seat may have gotten hot enough that unless he had another 1950 type season he was gone. If the Bear had beaten the Vols even once he may never have coached at Texas A&M.

5. Ole Miss had some craptastic leadership in the 70s, 80s and early 90s that allowed everyone else in the SEC to just pass them. Donald Zacharias coming to MSU and giving a damn and hiring Jackie got them off their asses.
There's so much truth to this statement it hurts. In a way, State and Sherrill are responsible for our rebound in the late 90's-present (sans the Orgeron years and Nutt's last two years)
