But WHY do we have one of the worst basketball conferences? Up until 7 or 8 years ago that sure as heck wasn't the case. The SEC had been a VERY good basketball conference my entire life up until the early half of the 2000s. Now outside of Kentucky, Florida, and maybe a team or two more it has been unwatchable. VERY few SEC players can consistently shoot and about the same can't handle the ball consistently without turning it over. SEC players were just as athletic 10, 20, and even 30 years ago as they are now except SEC player now don't seem to be able to shoot or handle the ball as well consistently. You can also look at the NBA drafts from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s and see them loaded with SEC players. How many players from the SEC not counting Kentucky have gone 1st round since say 2007? Compare that to the 80s and 90s and then try to tell me college basketball plays are getting better.
P.S. I have 2 close relatives that started for SEC basketball champion teams so I'm not clueless about the game.

SEC BB started sucking right around the time football got HUGE(R). No coincidence.

Is this thread not proof enough for you? A lot of people in SEC country just aren't basketball fans. You have terrible support from the universities which leads to shitty hires then that leads to poor recruiting. If a bunch of universities in the SEC made a bigger dedication to basketball things would get better. If every team filled an arena like they do when Kentucky comes to town, you'd solve a lot of issues.

They are, but they aren't playing in the SEC.

We're to basketball what the Big Ten is to football -- a two team conference living on past accomplishments with a few other historically good programs (Arkansas, Mizzou, LSU, et al) who haven't done anything in years and a bunch of bottom feeders.
Plus, we don't allot the resources toward basketball that other conferences do, which is a good thing. Basketball has essentially become a loss-leader in the business of collegiate athletics. Football floats the boat for the athletic department as a whole, and football is the guiding force of realignment and the all-important conference TV contract negotiations. Remember when the Big 12 almost dissolved, which would have left Kansas shite out of luck? No one wanted them because they bring nothing to the table in football despite being the Alabama of college basketball. Heck, a few years ago UNC's athletic department made something like a $200,000 profit -- which is damn near poverty when it comes to the business side of things in college sports -- and they'd just won the National Championship.

Uhh...I would start with this thread. People in the SEC don't care about basketball. It's pushed to the side compared to football and it shows.

So "one of the worst basketball conferences" is the basis of talent in college basketball? Seriously?

I did understand this idea that these kids don't play high school basketball too
Before AAU we used to work during the summer on fundamentals. Now they play games instead and as a result players in general are behind where they were before AAU became so big.

We did both, but there also limits now on the amount of time people spend with their high school team in the offseason.

We had limits too. Our coach just didn't care to follow them.

Don't pretend like no SEC fans care about basketball or that SEC basketball has always been in the current dreadful state it is now in. Just look at all the quality NBA players the SEC produced from 1980 to 2005. The list is a who's who of great NBA players. Outside of Kentucky and Florida, the SEC's output of quality NBA players has been pathetic since about 2005.
As for saying SEC fans don't care, yes a lot of them here Don't care. However, I've followed college basketball very closely for about 30 years ago and SEC schools like Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, Tennessee, Vandy, and Miss State (during the 90s) were just as good and just as invested as fanbases as Florida and joined Kentucky in making the league great in both quality and fn support. I badly miss those days and there has to be another reason other than the simplistic "SEC fans just don't care about basketball excuse. The AAU circuit screwing up prospects especially in the Southeast and some unfortunate coaching hires has been a bigger factor imho.

I tried, really tried, to care when I was a student (went to several home games). Just couldn't get into it compared to football, and this was during the Shula years.

Fortunately, no one at Mizzou gives a shite about basketball.

Yes but this conference makes it tough. Our conference tourney is worse than the Maui invitational
