All sports championships allow you to play your way to the championship except football. Every Conference champion should be the qualifier for making the playoff. From those teams the championship tourney should begin. But no, TV money wants to guarantee big crowds from big schools over best teams. What a shame.

Nothing's changed, it's always been this way. And somehow, tons of folks STILL love college football and follow it more than any other college sport.

I really believe that the 4 team playoff will convert to an 8 team playoff in just a few years.

Absolutely not. Winning the Big East or ACC does not mean you are good enough for the tournament. Winning your conference should have no input on who plays in the tournament.

The only time there's been a real problem is when an undefeated team gets shut out of the championship. If you're North-Northeastern Wyoming and you're undefeated, you'd still go to the 4 team playoff 19 out of 20 times.

It will- and I will be okay with it as long as Round One are played on-campus. It's just too much for the average fan. I can afford to go to the bowl game each year, but two of them is just out of the question. I think they should be forced to have the National Championship at a site with at least 75,000 seats, and split it 50-50 between schools. I've read that the allotment to each school will actually be lower than before- just 15,000 each

I can't believe that TV networks want to make as much money as possible. People who complain about every thing the federal gov't does are deeply concerned about Boise State's right to play in a major bowl game. Florida lost 800 thou last year because no one wanted to pay to go to New Orleans and watch their team play Louisville. Conference champs? Nobody cares who the conference champ is of most conferences.

I second this. There is no way that the 2nd best SEC in most years should be left out because a team made it through a down trodden ACC, Big East (or American Conference or whatever they are now), or even B1G conference undefeated or with 1 loss. In most years the top 2 or 3 SEC teams are head and shoulders better than the champs of those conferences.

Going to 4 teams is already a money grab when in most seasons 2 is fine. They will go to 8 then 16 just because of the money and I hope the fans reject it because it will dilute the value of the regular season. Look what happened to college basketball. NCAA is moving games out of domes because they can't sell seats for the early games.

If you want to be in a 4 team playoff schedule well and win all your games.

This is only a requirement if you want an official NCAA Sanctioned D1 Football title.

But but but then the Gumps wouldn't be a dynasty!!! How would ESPN sell advertising slots if they alone couldn't decide who the best team was?

I'd be ok with this if you throw in at-large teams like.... you know.... every other NCAA tourney ever.

Not at all. But let's not act like Bama has "dominated" college football the past few years. That myth, along with the 2011 national title, is a result of ESPN. If the OP's conditions held true, you wouldn't be repeat national champs.

I always thought we should take the 11 BCS Conference champions and 5 at large teams - and have a 16 team playoff.

I'm curious to see the attendance/tv numbers for the four major college sports and the four professional leagues over the last decade or two. I'm betting CFB popularity has increased at a better rate than most of the other leagues, all of which have playoffs.

Not true, it never mentions being EXCLUSIVE to conference champions. No post season tournament in ANY of the NCAA's 89 sports in 3 divisions are restricted to conference champions.

Well, this is the last year of the "BCS"....2014 is the start of the "College Football Playoff" which is the new 4-team playoff

I don't think it will take long to go to 8....all we need is a Big 5 Conference Champ left out of the playoff, like the PAC 12 or B1G champ
