So basically, the two biggest universally acknowledged criticisms of the program and Smart's desire to coach our rival in the NC game were the reason he was not hired?

i just don't get it. i've read numerous posts from auburn fans saying auburn did the right thing by not allowing smart the "look-see" he wanted. some went on to say that he would turn down auburn and take the info back to saban and use it against auburn in recruiting
if auburn has done NOTHING wrong, what's the big deal about letting a potential head coach have a look

He could have looked all he wanted once he signed his contract and was announced as the HC. Also could have had a clause in said contract that reduced buyout should major NCAA penalties be placed on the program

I know you Gumps are fapping over the Kirby angle but the real screwup by Auburn was not taking a serious look at Petrino.
Very juicy stuff all the way around though.

NO WAY I take that job or any other without knowing what the hell I am getting into.
Why sure boys I won't ask about the NCAA I will take this job on faith and when we get hammered can't recruit because of it and you make me the fall guy when we still suck....
not to mention ruin any future prospects I might have in coaching like you have Chizik...

You bet, any prospect has the right to make some demands. There isn't a school around that would open up the records to a prospect. Even a dumbass like you can agree to that. As far as Gus goes, we shall see how that works out.
Smart was acting as if he had Saban's credentials, he does not. Saying he was a better hire is speculative at best. He has some pros, but overall until he stops sucking Sabans nuts and go out on his own, we won't know.

If KS absolutely wants to coach in BCSNCG. He's not a head coach next year. Any program would not allow this, it never works out. It's even risky for Bama as well, even though maybe not as bad as sometimes, I think Saban still does most the work .

Not a knock on Auburn but that was smart on his part. He will have a very limited time to turn things around there and sanctions aren't going to make it easier( if there are any). Why would you give up a good job for a better job if that better job is going to be harder to succeed at due to sanctions. I mean who wants to become CEO of a company that may go under because of a pending investigation. Hiring your own staff at Auburn or Bama for that matter makes sense both schools have a history of meddling g in the coaches affairs. That seems like a very type demand from Smart. If I am goi g to take a job and be responsible for the outcome I want to fail or succeed on my merit.

Auburn told him there were not major NCAA issues, he had listened to the Bama party line.
His attitude was a major concern. He questioned the committees integrity.
Showed a lack of maturity. Came off as arrogant and immature.

If Auburn had NCAA sanctions coming down on them why would we fire Chizik. We could save 7 million, and if it was bowl ban bad he's already doing that without sanctions.

I do NOT think this is T-town Hunter style spin.
Very similar to last year's job opening @ Penn State many candidates had Smart-like stipulations that had to be agreed upon before any interview took place in earnest.
In it's current state with the NCAA breathing down Auburn's neck, the job would be a lateral move at best and very possibly a step in the wrong direction for Kirby.

I'm glad we keep him, and I'm glad auburn found a guy that was willing to do things "the auburn way".
