Asking to coach in the BCSNC for your new employers biggest rival is a huge conflict of interest. I'm not even sure why Bama would let him do that.

The full control thing is perfectly reasonable given the stigma around the Auburn program.

The NCAA thing is also perfectly reasonable. Look what Al Golden walked into at Miami. He got totally fricked because of the NCAA cloud hanging over the program, even though the alleged violations occurred well before he got there. You absolutely have to ask that question before accepting the head coaching position at any job in college football.

Actaully, In his position I would have asked for the same thing. Look what happened to Golden at Miami.

Most people would do what he did, given the circumstances and smoke coming out of that program. Worst thing is to take a job on faith and find out you've been screwed and can't go anywhere. Even if he'd had a clause in his contract for a reduced buyout, it's uprooting for his family to move and shift gears to take that chance. Everyone has a right to know what they are getting into.

I guess we can all assume that Malzahn doesn't know the full status of the NCAA investigation?

...and their refusal to do so wi why their program will continue to suck. Pat Dye needs to go the frick away, he has become the cancer on that Universities arse.

Kirby has too bright of a future to associate himself with Auburn, that ship has sunk and it will be another five years of shitty football with this hire.

Sounds to me like Saban just sent Smart on a recon mission to Auburn. Fake interview and the opportunity to bug a few offices. Saban is light years ahead of the rest.

Bill Obrien and Al Golden say hello. If you are a coordinator, your first stint as a head coach has to be successful or else you will be a career coordinator for life. If NCAA sanctions hit and he can't recruit, no buyout would save his career.

Malzahn and Petrino were the only people low enough on the list to be willing to take that job without knowing what the NCAA is investigating and having control of the staff.

Again, Auburn hired another coach with less clout than the men who hired him. Exactly the way Auburn likes it, and exactly why Auburn won't win much.

And no you don't get any job by asking for 5 weeks off right away so you can try to help your new employers biggest rival win a NC.
Ya think St Nick would be cool with that if the shoe was on the other foot???

bullshite. Successful football programs are run by one man, the head coach and it has always been that way. This is further evidence that the people at the top in Auburn still refuse to hand over control of the program and this will be their demise.

Smart was the perfect hire for Auburn and I am so glad that they fricked up this hire. Smart has way too much class to associate himself with that shithole. I am a firm believer that Pat Dye will have to die before it turns around at Auburn.

Should have never fired Tubberville. Tubbs is the best coach Auburn has ever had and they fired him because he refused to listen to a babbling drunk.

Auburn is in bad shape.

If some dude has hooked up with Lindsey Lohan on a Vegas bender and he later finds a girl he wants to marry, that girl has a right to know if he's got herpes before she ties the knot. Same thing with dirty NCAA football programs.

Interesting read. Glad Kirby didn't take it. He's in a position that he can be selective about what job he takes and sounds like this was a good one to pass on.

That is ridiculous. No one makes that decision. That is the reason Malzhan was hired. Malzhan was the only one who knew what went on down there and wanted the job anyway. No reason to disclose that.

I agree with this.I think Smart has been with Saban so long it may be hard for him to leave Alabama,a job where the Big Boss is the Head Football Coach, and go somewhere and have 5-10 Bosses. Not many programs have given the set of keys to the HC like Bama has.Meyer may have close to that at Ohio St.jmho

Yet again this thread demonstrates the fact that Bammers are more interested in Auburn than Bama.

According to Scarbo Kirby Smart (and I am sure most other coaches wanted the same thing) wanted 3 things.
1. To know about the NCAA investigation
2. To coach the bowl game
3. To have control over the program and to be able to hire his own assistant coaches and staff.

It is obvious Auburn did not have a problem with coaching the bowl game because Gus is coaching his bowl game.
Auburn shared the info on the NCAA investigation because Gus answered questions about it during the press conference, and said it was nothing.

So the hangup was giving the coach control over the program. JJ and crew do not hire the best coach they can find. They hire the best coach they can control.

Until JJ is gone and we have a AD who allows the coach to run the program we are only going to get the type of coaches willing to be controlled.

At this point the NCAA would be easier to deal with than the AD who sees himself as the General Manager over football operations.

It's called a negotiation. Smart knew they wouldn't let him coach in the BcSNCG. Saban wouldn't have let him either given that Kirby would be going to an in division rival

He asked to coach in game, full NCAA investigation disclosure, and full hiring firing authority expecting to get the "ok " on two of the three. He didn't get it so be walked.
