When was the last time a team with as bad a defense as Auburn's won the national title? 2007 LSU gave up a lot of points as the year went on but again that was obviously a bizarre year. And LSU was far more talented defensively than Auburn. Down the list everywhere you look is at least good defenses.

No team out of the SEC (past or present) will completely blow everyone out and not have a couple of close games.
Too many good coaches in the conference and too much talent.
Auburn has been the "great" team in the SEC so far this season and they have still had close games.
There are indeed great teams in college, but the fact remains they are 18-23 years old.
There are too many outside factors that can contribute to someone at that age having an "off week" here and there.
Usually that group of guys or individual player isnt the 3rd string center....
If anyone thinks someone at that age doesnt get cocky or becomes complacent after seeing themselves on Sportscenter while hearing experts slurp them up for weeks on end; you are delusional.

why not? alabama didn't exactly dominate their opponents last year, what's the difference?
Bama didn't blow everyone out, but they won most of their games comfortably. Auburn, Tennessee, and I guess Texas were the only ones where they seemed like they were in danger late. Their defense was much better than Auburn's, which makes a huge difference. Auburn has given up almost 25 points a game, which is atrocious for any team with title aspirations. They've already given up more points than Bama did all of last season.

And LSU had the lead in the 4th quarter, but let's not go into that game . Virginia Tech trailed by 3 in the 4th quarter too.
How history re-writes itself is pretty incredible.

Auburn - Improved, vastly.
LSU - Improved
Arky - Improved
MSU - Improved
Ole Miss - Same
Bama - Worse, but not much. Last year's Bama team was not the world beaters gumps claim.
SC - Improved
UK - Same
UGA - Worse
UT - Same
UF - Worse
Vandy - Same
5 teams better this year than last. 3 teams worse.
SEC as a whole is BETTER this year than last. Period.

an argument might be made that florida, being so incredibly pitiful this year, has made a few teams look like they have had a remarkable improvement from last year to this year..

A couple of weeks ago Bama fans thought they could beat an NFL team

VT was lucky to be in that game in the first place. Alabama manhandled them on both sides of the ball, they just had a few big special teams plays and maybe one on offense.

quote:That's not at all true. UT is considerably worse than last year. This year, UT and Florida this year are as bad as they've been in since divisional play began. Even Tennessee's 5 win teams over the last 5 years had much better personnel than this version. Georgia is playing as poorly as they have in a long time, too. This is easily the worst the SEC East has ever been.
UT - Same

right? and besides, how many freaking Bama fans really can be proven to think we'd beat ANY pro team?
i saw at least 2 people outwardly, stupidly admit it.
but seriously, i hate it when people on this website are fake and genuinely want to believe that ANY sort of "majority" of bama fans believe stupid shite like that.
*edit*
no offense superman if you thought we would. lol. and i'll pre-emptively call you a dumbass just for fun!

college football is down this year. The big 10 sucks, The sec east is in shambles, however the west is ridiculously good, The big 12 is probably the biggest joke i've ever seen, the pac 10 is oregon and some pretenders and i don't think oregon is elite by any means.
OU- sucks something aweful, sure they beat texas but texas sucks this year
M st- are you fricking kidding me
Auburn- doesn't have the oregon offense, but has the oregon defense
oregon- doesn't have a defense
LSU- great defense but for some reason they keep playing the short side option wonder on offense(although he could probably abuse the auburn secondary)

I think 2004 USC, 2001 Miami, 2002 Miami, 2004 Auburn, 2008 UF, 2006 LSU, and 2007 LSU would beat 2009 Bama the vast majority of the time in a head to head game.

I agree with the Miami's. They could possibly do it.The USC, Auburn, UF, and the LSU's it'd be close.

2001 version would easily do it. Not as sure about 2002. They have the talent to do it, especially in the front 7, but the team, for whatever reason, was considerably worse than they should have been defensively. Likely had something to do with an extra year under Larry Coker and being further removed from Butch Davis. Maybe they weren't as focused after losing a bunch of seniors who were hellbent on winning a national title.
I'd take 2004 USC over you as well, but that would be much closer than the 2001 Canes. The 2008 Gators were exceptional post Ole Miss. I'd probably take them, but I'm not sure about beating them a vast majority of the time.

If you look at the stats alone no one would believe that Alabama-VT was a 10 point game. Alabama outgained Virginia Tech 495-155.
Posted on 10/19/10 at 1:04 am to ohiovol
lawl any of USC or LSU's top 5 teams would have beat Bama last year.

Oklahoma is not his only real potential, they too look extremely flawed, but every team every year doesnt look perfect. Bama was a blocked field goal away from not being undefeated last year, Florida lost to Ole Miss in 2008, LSU lost twice in 2007, Florida lost to Auburn in 06, Texas almost lost to Ohio st and USC in 05, USC had numerous close games in 04 plus they now didnt win a couple of those lol. The same can be said for virtually any national champion every year. There is never a team that blows out every opponent

Unless Bama is dominant you see no dominate team. Typical Bama fan.
