I thought somebody said he had dementia?
Was it another health issue?

There was definitely rumblings of health stuff at the time but didn't think we ever heard specifics

I probably heard something, then forgot the specifics.

I think Kristi may have had a medical issue last year or the year before.

Nobody wanted him fired
Look what we’ve had since has been beyond horrible, but let’s not pretend it wasn’t well past time for him to go. He literally lost 4+ games EVERY SINGLE YEAR past year 1. He even went as far as calling 6-5 in 2020 a “solid season” and that got him fired.
I personally wanted him gone after the 2017 @LSU choke. Even with what we did the last half of 2017 (beating 2 #1 teams in 3 weeks) I wanted him gone. But even then he somehow managed to lose 4 games.
To this very day I don’t understand how Patrick Nix let his 5 star passing QB sign with a Gus Malzahn coached team. I said as much over at aufamily and multiple mods told me I wasn’t a real fan and that I needed to find a new site. I think I’ve been back to that site like 3 times since.
So I’m hoping you were being facetious when you said no one wanted him fired and that he is the best coach we’ve ever had. That last sentence has me hoping you were…

in reality, he might have been the best coach we ever had. He was a 65-70% win percentage against the toughest competition that we ever faced week in and week out with our two biggest rivals being at their absolute best in their histories. Who would you argue is above him? Tuberville? Tubs was solid but he was roughly the same win percentage against much inferior opponents with Alabama being the worst they were in 30 years.
I don't disagree, ultimately, parting ways with Gus. My problem is that we did it on a throwaway Covid year that meant jack shite and we have been cursed since.

I'm gonna go with Pat Dye easily. Tubs and Gus are close but I'd lean Tubs. I do love Gus though.

Well, it's taken AT LEAST 5 years to upgrade from Gus. Certainly hoping Comrade Golesh does well, but right now, he hasn't won even one game for us.
I always thought Gus was a goober, but he was OUR goober.

I stood behind Gus until that 2017 game @ LSU. I watched in a bar in New Orleans and about puked at what I saw. After that, I was ready for him to go.

I was told he was forgetting what plays he was calling on the sideline. It was bad enough he had to stop coaching. The guy that told me this is very well connected at FSU

6-5 during 2020 was not ideal but better than what we have experienced since.

I thank Gus for the good he did and he never got Auburn in trouble. But I stopped supporting the program (financially) because of his coaching in the second half of his tenure. I don’t regret it.
Just because every girl you have dated since your divorce has turned out to be a giant ho does not mean that your ex wife was not somewhat of a ho herself.
They all needed to go.

6-4 Regular Season record against an all SEC schedule is miles better than anything we have experienced since.
We have won 11 SEC games in the 5 seasons since then. Just better than 2 SEC wins per year.
