Several teams: Bugger off.

I get that these don’t hold the meaning and pageantry of the CFP, but I’m really kinda shocked at the attitudes in these cases. It’s basically a capstone trip with your team and a money maker for the school.

Am I missing something?

I don't get it either. If nothing else, it's an early start to spring practice.

ND is petty, but in their defense: They'd boat race both Tulane and James Madison

They're attempting to throw their weight around

I'm not sure how accurate this still is - but bowl games often cost schools money in the past. Part of accepting the bowl game is that you are responsible for a large portion of tickets. You have to buy them and if you don't sell them, well too bad.

In the past schools would take the loss for the extra practice time and national recognition. But now nobody really gives a frick about the games nationally, recruiting is all about NIL and if you are a team like Auburn between coaches, you apparently don't care about the extra practice/development time. Or, they'll have so many transfers and crap that it could be wasted.

Notre Dame is just upset. I'm pretty sure they could sell the tickets.

What am I unclear on?

A bowl game sounds like a good time for most players. If you are just a high-talent mercenary and your priority is your next gig, fine. I think most kids, though, still look at playing college ball as an experience to be enjoyed.

Refusing to go just seems to be catering to the minority that (delusionally, IMHO) treat the experience as a stepping stone.

I'm glad the facade of bowl games is finally falling apart. These games have never mattered outside of the playoffs/national championship. Dignity is more important than money. And I cant stand Notre Dame and am glad they got left out.

Yes you are missing the fact that the players who have the most sway don't want to play in a useless bowl game. It's 3 weeks of practice or 3 weeks of holiday during the holidays. They have all made great money, and will meet with their agents and plan their next move over the holidays and take some time off after a long season. Finals should be wrapping up and the rest of the students are going home. Most of these guys on the team are getting paid probably $10,000 a month on the low end to $200k a month so they can go without their pay for a month and be just fine lining up their next gig which may be at the same school or may not. I am going home to Florida for 3 weeks myself.

Spring workouts start in January and they are a bitch. It is nice to have some time off before that.

Robert Neyland had the correct idea for bowl games over 75 years ago. He treated bowl games as a reward for the regular season. That cost Tennessee at least 2 additional mythical national championships (if my old timer memory still serves). Today’s bowl games and participating teams would be well served by going back to the past and treating the game as a reward for the regular season. You don’t need to bring EVERYONE associated with the athletic department. You don’t have to bring the bands. You don’t have to use the game as an excuse to have practices. Treat the bowl experience as a break even as far as costs to the program goes. It can be done

Also, remember that bowls are not part of their culture.

Until 1970, Notre Dame didn't play in bowl games at all.

With the Stolen National Championship of 1966...one which we do NOT officially claim, by the way...after Notre Dame and Michigan State played to a 10-10 tie, Notre Dame was ranked #1 and Michigan State was ranked #2. Notre Dame refused to play in bowl games. They could have gone to the Sugar Bowl and played Alabama. Michigan State was the Big 10 champion, but Big 10 rules prohibited (a) teams from playing in the Rose Bowl in consecutive years, and (b) from playing in any bowl other than the Rose Bowl. So they stayed home also. Alabama, 10-0 and with one of the best defenses in NCAA history, played #6 Nebraska and won 34-7. It was only the 6th touchdown given up by Alabama all year.

Alabama would have been happy to play Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Instead, ND stayed home.

ND fans aren't happy that Bama is in and they are out? frick 'em. It's karma for 1966.

Maybe it's time for them to go away. The sponsors claim they lose money. The schools claim they lose money. If all of that is true, why are we doing it?

Some practice time is probably beneficial and with NFL opt outs, some seniors and underclassmen get some game snaps. But is it really worth it?

Bowl games made sense at one point. Man, I remember back in the 80s and there would be buzz around "representatives from the Sugar Bowl and the Orange Bowl" being at a game. There was this great mystery like your team was being courted for a date. Bowl games before Christmas were rare and didn't matter for sh*t, even back then (exception being the Holiday Bowl, which always seemed to have crazy arse games). So there was a good month of build up between rivalry weekend in late November, and the bowl games in late December. And your opponent was usually a team you had not seem much live.

So in 1982 there were 16 bowl games, that pitted 32 deserving teams. By 2019 there were 37 bowl games,

That's cause he's speaking aggy, but basically he in search of any excuse for the second in a row asskicking.

Texas began the Rollercoaster off the tracks, but aggies know it's not over yet.

Miami will without any doubt continue the Rollercoaster asskicking. Aggy knows it too.

Just as I called bullshirt before Texas & anm played whenever some aggy strutted by claiming a win vs their Daddy. Aggy knew for certain they were about to experience a whopping of epic proportion.

Aggy also began early excuses claiming, the UT game didn't matter, it meant nothing, they would be better off losing to Texas, Yada, Yada, Yada. Or in aggy speak, bad bull.

This is no different, an aggie distraction from reality of the coming arse whopping.

Poor aggies

That is not in their defense... Both JMU and Tulane were automatic qualifiers under the rules that Notre Dame was part of establishing. I'm not saying they are good rules (I think auto qualification is bad), but they are the rules that were worked out, and I believe ND had a seat at that table.

There is no defense to whining and quitting when you don't get your way. It's pathetic.
