UGA is suing a former player that transferred to Missouri.

Georgia's collective made a deal with a player for $500k NIL. He received his first monthly payment of $30k and then entered the transfer portal.

The NIL contract stipulated that if the player left the team or transferred that the player would have to repay the remaining amount of the contract back to the university. So UGA is suing the player for $390k. The numbers are weird because 2 $40k payments had something to do with bonus payments.

Interesting times.

I don't mind NIL, I think the players deserve more than just a scholarship. a degree isn't even guaranteed to get you a job in todays job market. NIL on the other hand if invested correctly, can set up a player to do things they might normally not have the funds to do otherwise. the problem is that there need to be contracts tied to NIL locking a player into a school for a certain amount of time and have penalties for leaving, so that they don't just stick around a year, get paid, and bail in the portal. it's the combination of no contract NLI and no real rules for the portal that's the problem. I can't stand UGA, but hopefully they win this to set a precedent going forward.

I agree, these players are basically employees now.

If they bail on the contract, take them to court and get the funds back. The ones that can’t afford to pay back; well,
I guess the incoming school will front
The bill.

You should be able to enter the portal 1 time with no penalty. After that it should revert to the old, school system where you give up a year of eligibility.

Even though I agree with thUGA’s stance, I still hope this hurts their recruiting.

He signed a contract and now wants to voluntarily void the monetary aspects, but he also cost the University the incurred costs of replacing him and ligation, so I'm not seeing why Georgia such not be entitled to more than the full amount to be returned.

It's a failure to negotiate in good faith. And if kids that want to play adult they shouldn't be allowed to hide behind juvenile rules. Because it's about time NIL functions as a two way street and if want out you need to sweeten the deal not just break it and get away like bank robber.

Good. It's beyond time that these contract deals actually have teeth

I hate to say this, but go dawgs! I hope uga wins this case although I think all they win is the money they paid out. Time to hold these pampered primadonnas accountable for their decisions which have consequences.

Didn’t we have a similar situation earlier this year involving a basketball player? He wanted to portal after the season, and there was talk about breach of contract and recouping funds?

I feel like Auburn put this kind of language into their NIL contracts.

Did I misunderstand the situation?

Ok, I can kinda see this argument about "losing a year of eligibility" after the first transfer, but you still have to have an NIL penalty regardless of that, otherwise they still come in, get paid, then transfer out with no repercussions after the first year. that just can't be a thing, ever.

Hope it puts a damper on all this angling for more money and bailing.

I also hope it is used to hammer GA in recruiting.

I read that somewhere, but I didn't read any specifics. I hope that we do. We might need to go down that route in the near future with some of our guys hitting the portal. Pretty sure Golesh told Thompson to hit the portal so I doubt he would be one.

Just to be clear, the kid did not receive the money.

His contract base pay was 420K, he received one payment of 30K and then transferred to Mizzou. Georgia is suing for the balance of 390K.

It similar to a construction project where they agree to have your restaurant done by X date, you put in a loss of business for every day after the deadline.

I agree Georgia should get the money (the kid obviously got more than that at Mizzou).

I also agree with another poster, Mizzou should have to buyout his contract, just like it is done with coaches. It would stop this flirting with the portal to get more money from your current team. I would take it a step further, no pun intended, if you step in the portal, you are gone, there is no flirting. Your spouse doesnt get to go check out the field.....and keep the housekeys.
