With HC decided now, I figure it’s worth talking about OC options. I like SP+ ratings because it adjusts for opponent, so I just went through the top rated offenses of teams that aren’t in the playoff (and could theoretically come on board quickly)

Tim Beck - Vandy (4th rated offense but a lot of that is Pavia)

Shannon Dawson - Miami (18)

Andy Kotelnicki - Penn State (21 and I don’t blame him for Drew Allar being a bad QB and he was getting major buzz before that)

Dean Kennedy - JMU (25 assuming they don’t get into the playoff)

Seth Doege - Arizona (26)

Gordon Sammie - UConn (31)

With the exception of PSU, all of those teams had at least 9 wins this year. Maybe Judge wants to be OC, but his background is special teams and I don’t think he has ever called plays.

ETA: here are current salaries and any notable resume items

Sammis $330k
Doege $750k - QB from TTech and North Texas
Kennedy -$275k. SEC experience at MSU and UF
Kotelnicki - $2 mil. Coached Jalon Daniels who has fallen apart after he left (also been injured a lot)
Dawson - no data since Miami is private
Beck - no data since vandy is private

Kingsbury- no data, but being paid $7.5 mil a year through 2027 due to the Arizona buyout

This OC hire with Golding at HC can’t be a shot in the dark. We need a proven commodity.

Agree, which is why I listed the top OC’s not currently on playoff teams who have experience calling plays. Y’all really think we can poach a sitting P4 OC of a playoff team? Seems unlikely to me given recent events but would love to be wrong.

I’m fine giving Kliff a call, but no clue why he would leave his cushy NFL gig. Briles is an absolute no for me given his history at Baylor. Also, he was fired with Taggart at FSU and outside of 2021 hasn’t really done much at Arkansas or TCU(barely in the top 40 of SP+)

He's a relic in today's NIL era.

Surely to goodness if we are willing to sling $2-3 million at an OC that brings some very good ones into play.

The ONLY way this whole Pete Golding thing will work in the longrun is keeping as much of the current staff in place and supplementing a damn good set of coordinators. I really hope that Pete doesn't decide to just do both the DC and the HC duties. That never works. I could see rolling with it for the playoffs but not a full season.

The horror isn’t winning the game. The horror is winning one game and then making a rash decision that has a negative long term impact
