Why didn't an SEC school pick up James Franklin?

He has been to the playoffs, worked a miracle at Vandy,
and would has been relatively inexpensive. Were Florida
and LSU blinded in their pursuit of Lane ?

I would have loved to have Franklin.

Maybe he didn't want to coach in the SEC

Agreed. I’m surprised he took the Va Tech job so fast. I would think he would have better offers.

His past, plus he has ties to the VA area I believe.

My guess is he just left a school with unrealistic expectations and was not interested in another.

Because these clowns are worried about optics of hiring a fired coach.

He is an east coast guy. The state of Virginia is a HS talent hotbed. The ACC is ripe for taking.

Basically all of this. He has connections in the DelMarVa area and he used to get a lot of his four stars from that region. It was a win-win for both

Might be he is a bit burnt out and just wanted a job that a) doesn't have the highest of expectations and b) doesn't mess with the offset language he has in his Penn State contract.

Because I think we've seen James Franklin's ceiling.

He won't do any better at LSU/Florida/Va Tech than he did at Penn State.

We didn't fire Brian Kelly to hire a new coach that will do essentially the same thing - lose big games to ranked opponents, go 9-3 regular season, miss the CFP or lose in the 1st round.

Great take. Plus, with Dabo potentially leaving Clemson, Mario wanting out of Miami, and Franklin looking to become the top dog, the opportunity is definitely there. The pressure also isn’t the same as it would be at an SEC school. He can ride off into the sunset successfully and make some good money in the process.

Franklin is a better coach than Kelly and would have been cheaper.

I saw a handful of Arky fans melting on the site formerly known as Twitter when Franklin signed with VT.

I’m not sure of the specifics of his offset terms.

Could another team have paid him $1/year, and Pedo State still have to pay him the buyout for a nice annual package?

If it’s a direct offset, what’s the incentive function?

Franklin knows the northern VA/MD area who. Recruited it while he was at MD.

He's going to do well at VaTech. The ACC is on the clock. He's going to have a great deal of success there. Now, how long will he stay? That's a better question.

Franklin has seen toxic fanbases. He just made the choice to go to an ACC team that has less expectations, and he looked at ease for the first time in months at his introductory press conference

We talked to him, but who knows. VT seems like a much better fit than an SEC school.

After what he did at Vandy it was a BAD move to go to PSU.
