1996 Florida Gators.

Even though there is all of this talk about parity brought about by NIL and the transfer portal, it’s still just like 8 different teams winning it over and over.

Has Ole Miss won one? what about Indiana?

It's been awhile since Texas A&M won one

I think the possibility of someone relatively new is greater with the 12 team playoff

Maybe. I think it will be Ohio St vs Alabama.

I don’t think Ole Miss or Arkansas have won a legitimate natty but if you say that to them they will get their panties in a wad.

Slight understatement.

Oregon has never won a natty and they have played for multiple ones.

The NCAA's list of Natty's since 1869

It shows LSU winning one in 1908, but I don't think we claim it. Guess we need to do like Auburn and claim it.
Maybe our new coach can announce it.

If it’s on that list, I would claim it. Alabama has 16 ion the list and that’s what I claim as a fan. I wish the University never claimed the other 2. 1941 in particular is egregious.

Only 2 of Auburn’s “nine” are on the list.

It is happening, however the NIL/Portal is just really around 4 years old. The impact has already been felt in the rankings, the 12 team playoff will be the final nail.

It has been a part talent and part popularity contest for the National Championship until CFP became a thing. Even with 4 teams it was still same old, same old. The expansion to 12 has bring much needed change.

I doubt this is the year, but we will see it in 2020s.

Considering they insist that games won before 1960 (whatever dumb year) don't count , they still haven't

I don't.

Harder for a less talented team to beat 2 or 3 real contenders in a row.

BCS was the best setup for a fluke IMO.

So since 1996:

6- Alabama (2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2020)
3- Ohio State (2002, 2014, 2024)
3- LSU (2003, 2007, 2019)
3- Florida (1996, 2006, 2008)
2- Georgia (2021, 2022)
2- Clemson (2016, 2018)
2- USC (2003, 2004)
2- Florida State (1999, 2013)
1- Michigan (2023)
1- Auburn (2010)
1- Texas (2005)
1- Miami (2001)
1- Oklahoma (2000)
1- Tennessee (1998)
1- Nebraska (1997)

Looks like 15 different programs. Tennessee and Michigan the only two of those 15 not to at least play for it a second time during that time period.

Well, they had essentially the entire team back and decided to get serious on D by hiring by Bob Stoops. In spite of that, they still needed an Arizona State loss in the Rose Bowl and a mulligan rematch with FSU to win the natty.

Our conference mate who hasn’t won anything since man walked on the moon fail to realize half the teams that play for a national championship lose
