Deboer is still growing as a coach.

You can almost see him getting more comfortable in each press conference. I’d equate him now to Saban at LSU; Growing into the guy who will be at max potential in another 4-5 years. I’m not saying he will reach the same ceiling or anything, but he is still getting better, and he is getting used to the reality of being the guy at a place like Alabama. In his postgame presser last night, he uttered the word “process” a couple of times, and it made my ears perk up a bit. I liked the hire, and I’ve always had a good feeling for him. However, last year’s inconsistency and some stuff I’d heard from behind the scenes had me hesitant to fully buy in. Seeing how he has things rolling right now, and I don’t just mean on the field, I can’t help but think the future looks bright.

Curious, what stuff you heard from behind the scenes?

Probably the same public “behind the scenes” stuff that has been discussed ad nauseam.

Guys, it’s the black hoodie. Don’t overthink it.

I’ve been hoping since last year’s USCe game that he would be able to understand the intensity of the SEC and change his style to something that would match it. This upcoming game will really be the first unranked letdown potential game of the season as I don’t count Wisconsin since they were at home and the 1st P4 game after our week 1 loss (1st game of the season should never be a potential letdown game…that FSU game is still completely baffling). I want to see DeBoer have our team ready to play and play hard from the opening whistle.
I do think Ty’s and Grubb’s intensity are really helping this team, and hopefully TKIII is bringing it on defense all week. Teams like OSU only have to get up for like 3 games a year and 2 of those teams still have a lot less talent than them. It’s nothing like going through the SEC where >80% of the teams you play have top 25 talent.

My opinion; Deboer needs a vocal guy like Ty. A guy that holds people accountable. I think KD is a very passive guy, which has its place, but having an alpha on the team is imperative.

I posted about it last fall. It was just stuff about guys coming in all smiles after losses and the like. I think DeBoer had to adjust how he related somewhat, and he has said as much this season. I think he is just genuinely a nice guy and had to develop a bit of a harder exterior. I don’t think we should want him to try to be Saban as that is just not his demeanor, but he had to come to realize things just work differently at a place like Alabama. I think what footsteps said in the post above is pretty spot on. Coach is learning to demand accountability at the level necessary for success in this job. He needs players like Ty and assistants like Grubb at this point, but he is already growing into that role himself.
ETA: I claim NO insider status whatsoever. Just had some conversations with people here in town at the time when everyone was a little frustrated with the up and down nature of the season.

Deboer is 19-3 against the top 25 and 7-1 versus the top 10. Best record of any active coach. He knows how to coach. Just taken him a minute to figure it out at Bama and get his culture and guys in the system.
I feel pretty confident moving forward that we have the right man.

Exactly. Last year he was playing the role of politician. He needed to keep the roster together, and had to deal with Milroe and all of the LANK squad bullshite despite Milroe being a terrible fit for his offense.
This is the first year we're actually seeing DeBoer style football, and it starts with the QB and the passing game.
The way this staff is evaluating and recruiting prospects, we're only going to get better and better. I feel great about the future at Alabama.

Getting Grubb back was such a gamechanger imo

I actually start to shiver at the idea of losing a game to a Mike Shula offense.

Imagine how great we would be if Grubb didn't allow his 5 yr old grandson call the plays for 2 or 3 drives every game

Tyrone Prothro is not walking through that door.

I actually think that Deboer is realizing that the athletes at Alabama, for the most part, need to be coached differently than he's coached guys at Fresno State and Washington. Like, culturally, most of these guys are from the south and probably are more apt to take to a fiery, in-your-face approach as opposed to the more laid back style of the west coast.
That might sound dumb, but I've seen a demeanor change with Deboer on the sidelines and how he interacts with players before and during the games that I feel like is very noticeable. Just my two cents.

Having Ty Simpson be what has been this season makes Grubb job a lot easier as well. I have no doubt Grubb is an excellent OC. But at the end of the day, players matter, talent matters and I'm not sure even Grubb could have gotten out of last year's QB what we would have needed him to get out of him. The kid is having the same issues on the NFL level with the Seahawks right now.
Ty Simpson has been a big reason why the offense has been able to look like it has. It's like the old saying "You can't make chicken salad out of chicken sh*t. It doesn't matter how much mayonnaise or salt and pepper you add to it. It's still chicken sh*t".

agree…noticed it ever since Tim Keenan went up to him (before he came back from injury) on the sidelines. Good that the players and staff are feeding off of one another.
