I love the defensive scheme he went with tonight. It was very effective but just a couple of complaints:

(1) Get Saab off the field on run downs. (He's terrible vs the run)
(2) Play guys who can read in the secondary because Bama should've had at least 3 picks. Tennessee ran a deep comeback on every third and forever it seemed. (Get out of your back pedal and react)

Hill-Green needs to be in on every run down!
Dre Kirkpatrick Jr needs to be on the field!
Maybe move Cam Calhoun to safety so he can see the field.

Hubbard wasn't the best tonight!
Saab is probably the worst safety I've seen at stopping the run/fitting a gap.

We can be a lot better in the back end if they just make a few tweaks. That's just my opinion

We WON but I had to vent just a little. Lol

It was better but we were giving up a ton of 8-15 yard passes. It was almost like we were in prevent during the 2nd had at times. They are playing better as a unit tho.

We were! I'm just so use to him having safeties who would pick those passes off like he did at South Alabama.

Like I said I'm just venting lol

So explain this to me...why didn't we run the defense that we stopped their last drive with on the drive they made it to 20?

For some reason he employed a 3-4 dline on the goal line, which he does most of the time, and it cost us that 7 points. Tenn , as we were told a million times, runs 90% of the time in goal line situations. Why not employ a traditional goal line defense or even the def that stopped their last drive? He does things that dont work.

Hard to complain about the defense. They've been holding teams welll below their season averages during this tough stretch. I dont really care how they are getting it done.

They had like 5 sacks this game. That’s more than TN gave up all year and there were a ton of pressures and Aguilar to his credit made the play.

4 sacks. 3 from Pierre (LB).

Our DL is ineffective at times due to our scheme more than our players. We just don’t have a ton of depth or studs on the line.

Kudos to Wommack benching players quickly and rotating. That’s refreshing.

I’ll give him credit. If you play bad, he benches you.

I thought the defense was mostly good but too conservative at times in the second half. We still see some terrible run fits by the secondary and most of the d line just eats blocks.

In the second half we went more 3-3-5 over 4-2-5, and it didn’t work at all. UT ran all over it.

42 was great in the first half
41 should play more than 0
2 was good
16 was good

1 has regressed massively from last year and 7 wasn’t great either.

Agreed, those 3 played really good tonight.

Not much experienced quality depth, but Tim Keenan, LT Overton, and James Smith are all really good football players that will play on Sundays. The biggest issue I see is middle linebacker. Particularly Lawson.

Anyone complaining about this defense needed to watch Ole Miss give up 34 first downs and points on every single possession today. It's not perfect but thank God we aren't watching a Golding defense anymore.

Yeah could have been worse, luckily Tennessee refused to catch the ball

James Smith played a decent game (had a sack). Overton is inconsistent. Sometimes he looks good. Sometimes he goes missing in action. I think Tim Keenan is still hobbling a good bit and it shows. London Simmons shows promise.

I appreciate Freddie Roach as a player and he's a good recruiter BUT, I get the sense he teaches our D linemen pretty much nothing.

I dunno. I thought Kirkpatrick’s play was pretty rough last night. The times I noticed, he overran a few plays and whiffed on some.

Hubbard is either making a pick or getting beat due to being slow - he is seriously hit or miss.

Seems clear they were playing bend but don’t break last night. The didn’t get beat deep, gave up some runs, but battered down inside the 20s.

Lawson is an issue . . .

That most definitely was Saab you was watching not Dre Jr.

Hubbard doesn't get beat a lot because half of the time we are in some type of zone. (Don't know where you got that from).

They all seem stuck in their back pedal and not reacting to the ball.

Maybe we are tired as we should be. Just get this win in South Carolina and get to this bye week!

This defense scheme keeps teams in every game due to lack of aggressiveness. We literally hardly ever get a knock out punch and teams hang around. I do not like shell coverage teams on defense and we have become one now. This team will go as far as this defense will be able to go. When we go lights out and be aggressive we play well. His playcalling is a bit timid to my liking. He is not real good at making in game adjustments also. I am not a fan of bend don’t break type defenses and that is what we are now, but some players should not be out there too. Lawson being the main one. He just don’t have it.

And Vandy’s offense scored at will on a good LSU defense

I’m still very skeptical but the vision of a bend, don’t break defense is coming to fruitions

Great post!

If people never watched a Kane Wommack defense prior to him coming here...they would assume this scheme is not aggressive.

Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, his safeties at South Alabama would've picked Tennessee off left and right. Our safeties are always in their back pedal or not being aggressive and reactive! They was literally out there just playing a zone!

Zay Mincey, Justin Jefferson, Bray Hubbard, and Keon Saab all should've had a pick last night.
