I only know of the Red River Shootout. When did the name change??

Years ago (2005ish), because media decided "shootout" was triggering (pardon the pun) and insensitive.

I believe the Shootout is played a couple weeks before the Cocktail Party.

About the same time the left media realized you can't tell the sex of a newborn baby and that mention of any word remotely connected with ammunition or firearms meant you were a nazi-in-training.

It wasn't so much about the game. It was about Deep Ellum the night before. Folks needed to be reminded this is a rivalry, not a shootout.

Well, with wokism being phased out. You would think they would bring the shootout part back.

Which folks are these?

I always liked it being called the shootout because that’s a football term for a specific type of game. It’s like low scoring hard nosed defensive battles are not even allowed in this rivalry

because media decided
More likely, it came from the pussies in Austin.

If you want to be exact, it is the Allstate Red River Rivalry, played on the grounds of the Texas State Fair.
Not to be confused with the State Fair Classic, which is a football game also played at the Texas State Fair between Grambling and Prairie View.

The last crazy one I remember was Anthony Richardson couldn’t be nicknamed “AR” anymore because it’s a gun. I wonder how much of it was his idea to apologize for his nickname at a presser and the AR pendant he had on prior, and how much was that Disney and the school forcing him.

Are you kidding? The games were always shootouts. High scoring. First team to punt twice usually lost. Defense was optional. It was the perfect name for the rivalry until media people tied it to gun violence.

Aggie sure is interested in this Texas/OU game. Funny thing, it would better serve Aggie if OU won. But it would ruin Aggie's tailgate party.

But I think the hard nosed D games are the BEST, and they have those too.
Think about it- the best Westerns are not the all hell breaks loose multi party gunests. It's when there's just two guys facing off in the end- good vs evil.
except here it's evil vs evil.

Yep that was lame. But the pendulum has swung back and nobody gives a damn about PC terms.
I’m glad the RRS is back

We should ignore that and use "Shootout" instead.
On a related note, the media also change the name of the Ole Miss - MSU rivalry to the "Egg Bowl," when the real name is "The Battle for the Golden Egg." The former saved some typing, I guess.
