TV Comments on DeBoer

Did yall hear the announcers talking about how DeBoer felt like he could now talk to the team in a certain way after the FSU loss? I forget exactly, but basically be himself, be real, etc.
Struck me as odd. He’s the head coach. He didn’t have this epiphany after losing to Vandy?
Yall hear those comments? Did I misinterpret them?

Yeah i heard that, but I think you took that out of context.
If I remember correctly, He had a self assessment with himself and talking to lot of people about what he could do/ not do. So He said he don't give a damn about what people think and he will do things his way. So It sounds like there was lot of people in his ear for a while telling him what needs to be done and etc. Saban spoke on that a little few days ago and from what I gather, It sounds like he and Saban had a conversation and you can see CKD's demeanor on sideline are different.

No, you heard it right and it also struck me as odd.
It seems like maybe DeBoer came in with kid gloves on and wasn't hard on the team as he wanted to be.
Which is extremely odd considering who he replaced. Saban would ride your arse harder up by 40 points than he would if you were losing by 4.

I think there is some stuff going on behind the scene... Power struggles...

Makes sense. I hope he was being told to hold back in some way and will now be the DeBoer that we thought we hired.
There are a lot of “Can’t Miss” coaches that don’t pan out. I just can’t get past DeBoer’s body of work. Doesn’t seem like fluke, and I hope he does whatever it is that needs doing

Washington fan’s one knock on him was being under prepared and lack of motivation for bad teams. That doesn’t work in the SEC and specifically at Bama, because you take an L instead of a struggle win when you’re the other team’s Super Bowl.

I agree with this. It’s just weird how he’s done so well everywhere he’s been and now all of a sudden he doesn’t know what he’s doing. His success wasn’t a one season surprise.

How much of this is on Byrne? Is he trying to take more control of the program than he should, or is he not doing enough to diminish those type of distractions? Whatever the case DeBoer needs to just be himself, otherwise he’s going to be out of a job.

It's bizzare to me that a guy with as much financial leverage as any coach in the country would need 15 games and "Kalen DeBoer buyout" becoming the top Google search term in Alabama to have this epiphany.

I think Kalen by his nature doesn’t like being a bad cop. He’s a nice guy and you can see that in his demeanor. He’s doesn’t really chew arse.
You can do that but still hold people accountable. These players are being paid now. There’s no room for not doing your job. I don’t think he’ll ever be a firey type. But maybe we’re finally past the unending leash like our qb situation last year. That’s my hope.

His entire demeanor was different yesterday. He walked off the field like Saban used to. No smile, serious business.

We need him to be the best Kalen DeBoer, not an imitation of something he isn’t.

Like someone else said, squinty eyes hit different when you’re whooping arse.

I'm having a hard time figuring out Deboer. Sometimes I think he'd rather be somewhere else. And other times I think maybe he is finding himself here.

That was supposed to be the big difference this year in that Grubb was supposed to be the bad cop to DeBoer's good cop.

What about home v road games? His teams have been terrible in the road at Bama. Why is this? Lack of mental toughness? Logistics issues?

I think it has more to do with him coming in in this NIL/Portal era and having to keep from losing the whole team last year and appeasing some egos. Those same players probably feel a little entitled and put DeBoer in a catch 22 spot. So he let them do it there way to show them the outcome they get when they don’t prepare. So he probably put the clamps down this past week and now they see those results. Hopefully that is enough.
Saban was a known commodity when he took the job and didn’t really have to worry about NIL and the portal. DeBoer had to navigate both. So I give him credit for not having to start from scratch. Hopefully the players have bought in now and we don’t have many more of the Vandy, Oklahoma or FSU debacles in the future.

Maybe that’s still the case. Unfortunately we have an incompetent cop at defensive coordinator
