Buyout agreements….

When are schools going to wise up and include a performance clause in these crazy contracts that includes a ridiculous amount to buyout a coach if he/she isn’t working out? It just doesn’t make good business sense to not include one.

The schools wouldn’t give them if they didn’t have to. You are worth what you are able to negotiate. UW would’ve gladly given DeBoer the exact same contract we gave him.
So it’s the cost of doing business. You have to give out these ridiculous contracts so you damn well better pick the right guy

Sexton would walk out the AD's office laughing his arse off.

All schools would have to agree on a pay scale or incentive based coaching contracts being the "norm."
It sure would make it more fun if they were coaching for their supper.
These insane buyout clauses weren't a thing in the first 100 years of the sport...and it was better for it.

I wonder if they’d be interested in taking him back ASAP?

I don’t think it will be long before coaches salaries plateau or even start to drop. A lot of schools can’t afford to pay a coach several million dollars AND fund NIL to the level needed to compete. You only control one of those items and it’s in the best interest of the coaches to go along with it or they won’t keep their job very long.

This one’s on the athletic department. Should have gone cheap. 7M, 3Y deal. Don’t care who. It seriously didn’t matter with the roster turnover. Just see what happens. You take the best pitch on the least money.

I agree, anyone with any amount of common sense knew the first guy after Saban would be a fail. Should have hired a chump for 2 seasons and then hired someone else.

No margin of Safety. I saw this coming hence I was open to hiring assistant coach.

I said in the past if the THE guy is not available then it's better to take a cheap step backwards then committing to a possible expensive error.

Kinda weird this is not the norm…
If you’re a contractor and hire a plumber and he shits the bed, you fire him and you sure as hell dont pay him to leave.
Maybe I’m off base here but it doesn’t make sense to me why performance is not on the table in these buyouts.

Because there are plenty of plumbers available. If there were only 136 plumbers in the whole country and only 10-15 were considered elite and you were working on a billion dollar a year toilet project then that plumber could make demands that he can’t now.
You’re worth what you can negotiate

You better deliver a win for every million per year you’re asking for or come damn close.

While we're wondering, I wonder if his wife is really happy in T-Town? May have to get Pawl to give Kalen the Mark Gottfried treatment and see if she will take the bait.

Jimmy Sexton is the single most powerful individual in college football.

Harbaugh had a bad year at Michigan and he gave money back as a result.

Everybody needs to settle down about the buy out shite. Yes, it is frick ton of money and it is absurd what the sport and schools have gotten themselves into with coaches pay and NIL. On that, everybody can agree.
If and when the time comes to part ways, this will all be handled in a business like fashion. The first step will be a private separation meeting and then negotiations to reducing it to some level based on a detailed performance review. He will take something less and be allowed to continue his coaching career somewhere else. It will most surely be paid out over years and amortized like any other capital expenditure. That's how these things work. So, bottom line is the buyout will not stop UA from firing him. A mistake will have been made by many people including Nick Saban who endorsed the hire if what we read is true. It is what it is, and both sides will move on. Will not stop them from finding a new coach. Just need to get it right this time. I don't believe athletic directors should be given full power to hire a coach these days. With the money being spent now, most of these guys are business managers first and not necessarily talent evaluators.
One last thing. The fans will also be partially on the hook for this money. You better believe ticket prices will go up in revenue sports, and basketball will pay a hefty part of the price. I decided 2 years ago I was not going to pay to watch this stuff anymore, but I am sure I am not in the majority on that. I just don't have an interest in minor league sports.

It kind of is but in the wrong way….if you perform well and win X amount of games, win your conference or win a national title you get a performance bonus (most schools do this)…..there’s no penalty on a bad performance and that’s not right!

Why the hell would he take less? No way that happens. What incentive would he have to take less than his contracted buyout? Just to be nice?

Do you remember when we brought on Butch Jones as an analyst/car detailer after Tennessee fired him?
