Kevin Scarbinsky thinks The University of Alabama owes it to other in-state schools like UAB (lol) and Jacksonville State to schedule them instead of out-of-state programs like UL-Monroe and Western Kentucky. Why would we give potential competition a leg up by giving them the exposure of playing in Tuscaloosa? We single-handedly revived Auburn's foundering football program when the Iron Bowl was renewed in 1948. Why would we want to give the likes of UAB momentum by allowing them to play us?

I have never understood this idea that Alabama owes smaller in-state schools a handout. Scarbinsky is a socialist. If Auburn wants to play the likes of UAB, Troy, and Jacksonville State then that's their prerogative.

Are you really that scared of UAB, Troy, Jacksonville State, and South Alabama?

Skarbonsky hates Alabama and Auburn more than anyone else.

It’s his job for decades.

I actually have a soft spot for Jacksonville State as I attended that school from 2006-08 before I transferred to Alabama. My dad is also a graduate of Jax State so there is that, too. However, do I want quality depth being diverted to those schools when they could be helping win national championships in Tuscaloosa? Absolutely not.

I'd rather their programs not exist at all.

LSU plays an in-state opponent every season in order to boost the lesser programs financially. It was a deal reached by the legislature and the school.

potential competition

That makes you look small.

But then petty is en vogue these days.

State pride. After all, why does Western Kentucky deserve a handout any more than UAB?

I hate this argument. Kentucky used this argument FOREVER to avoid scheduling our instate schools, including Louisville.

I'd much rather watch UK play WKU or EKU than Troy or Southern Miss.

It has been this way all my life. Alabama and Auburn will schedule in-state FCS schools, but not FBS, and it will likely never change. Auburn played Jax State about 8-10 years ago when they were still FCS, and almost lost to them. It took a last minute score to force OT and Auburn won in OT. Bama had a similar game with Georgia Southern, and we all remember the loss to ULM.

Nothing to gain, everything to lose.

I graduated from Troy, and lots of the staff and students would complain about why the big boys in state would never schedule them in football. We would play LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia, Mississippi State, Florida, Arkansas, and other nearby P5 schools. Auburn and Alabama would schedule other teams who were in the Sun Belt at the time, like MTSU, WKU, North Texas, Arkansas State etc.

Bama's relationship with UAB is so weird. Like being bothered enough by them to shut down their program lol.

The notion that UAB would somehow rise up to be some kind of national powerhouse simply by virtue of being whipped by bama is...perplexing.

It had nothing to do with fear of the program surpassing Alabama. UAB doesn’t have the support even with a new stadium. The outrage of shutting the football program down is what’s perplexing.

For years the Auburn fans complained that UAB couldn’t have success because they played at Legion Field. Truth is - Alabama State has more fans in Birmingham than UAB.

Because they aren't competition. LSU has been playing smaller in state schools for years. If you're going to give someone a big pay day for being a rent a win you might as well keep it instate.
