After winning the first 12-team College Football Playoff and a national title as an at-large selection in 2024, Ohio State coach Ryan Day would like to see future models include at least four automatic qualifying spots for the expanded Big Ten.

"We're in the Big Ten, and we have 18 teams and some of the best programs in the country," Day told ESPN. "I feel like we deserve at least four automatic qualifiers."

How many different Big 10 teams have won a national championship since 2000? 2? 3* if you count USCw. The Big 10 is top heavy, year in and year out. 3 out of 18 teams...

Meanwhile, the SEC has 5, 7* if you include Texas and Oklahoma. That's almost half of the conference, folks.

By using Day's logic, if the Big 10 gets 4 in, the SEC should get 8.

Does that mean SEC will get 5 teams instead of 4?

History and rules are written by the winners.
But even Day doesn’t really believe his statement

Day is only politicking here. 'Hat in hand' gesture under the guise of vouching for the conference. He's getting the competition to soften up towards him by playing the good guy.

Make no mistake, once the rubber meets the road the facade will fade.

In classical terminology it's called: Bait and Switch

It’ll end up at 24 like FCS in the not so distant future.

Only conference champs should get AQ spots.

It's like you people have no idea how this is working. Either intentionally or not

The expansion is going to 16, the B1G and SEC will have half the field minimum. They are both going to have 4 guaranteed. He is just speaking on behalf of the conference.

And it's funny for SEC fans to talk crap this year when OSU knocked 2 out of the playoffs, and Michigan and Illinois beat 2 of the 3 teams the SEC thought should be in the playoffs

If they’re gonna make the playoffs this huge might as well turn it into a high school format where the 4th best team in the division gets in automatically.

With the way things are - they need to change the format entirely or make it a huge bracket. The regular season importance - which was what made college football so good - is become less and less relevant by the year. Essentially Ohio state won a tournament last year and nothing else to show for it including a loss in the last game of the regular season.

Pretty much, yeah.

I mean the playoff is expanding bc there’s too much money for these fricks in college football. The game is a watered down version of its former self so anyone who is a fan of a team in the major conferences should be campaigning for this model for the power conferences, which are the SEC and Big10.

The only reason he has a title is because they expanded the playoffs to let his team in. Of course he wants an autobid so when he shits the bed against Michigan and the only other ranked team on his schedule, he has a shot.

OSU last year would have been in the 4 team playoff and it's not really even that close

Let me show my work

OSU was ranked 6th in the poll behind Oregon, UGA, ND, TX and PSU. TX and PSU both had 2 losses and both lose CCGs. The committee said that beginning in 2024 CCG losers would not be penalized

OSU beat PSU head to head. Prior to 2024 when they did punish CCG losers (see UGA in 2023), PSU would have been behind OSU when it lost the B1GCG.

TX had how many top 25 wins? 0? OSU had 2 top 10 wins, with one being over the aforementioned PSU @PSU. They also beat playoff team Indiana by 20 points. TX' best wins were 2Ls to UGA

OSU would have been 4th in the playoff poll, played Oregon in the Semis (we all saw that game), while UGA and ND played (we also saw this game). Then OSU would have played ND in the finals (hell we also got to see this game).

Same result

Your team has never sniffed a playoff spot or a bcs championship game so I'm not really sure why you're even chiming in, none of this will impact south carolina either way. I think the outback and capital one bowl qualifiers will stay the same.
