Things NIL/Portal situation has accomplished

Pure off season thread and mostly opinions:
1. Lowered passion. Arguably good…probably bad. Maybe just me, but I just don’t have the same passion for my school being a better fund raising machine. Knowing that the roster will be completely different every year is a bit of a buzz kill.
2. Allows teams to more quickly fill needs. There’s really no excuse to be terribly lacking…but the resulting better parity may look like mediocrity as Vandy thumps Alabama….
3. May lessen the facilities arms races. I’ll stick my neck out and say that most kids now care more about NIL dollars than fancy dressing rooms.
Either portal or NIL might be positives. Together with no real restrictions on either…I hafta agree with Saban.

Another positive is that it allows for players who otherwise may have been stuck on someone’s bench to be able to go somewhere else and play more easily.
On the other hand, gone will be the days of super dynasties as programs will not be able to create the same depth they once had. Bama and Georgia first teams might be as good as they were 5-10 years ago, but the second teams would be whipped by the second teams of old.

4. Making players who would, thirty years ago, fight like hell for their chosen college and for their teammates into dickheads who will pick up their lives, move to another state, change uniforms and tell their former teammates to frick off just to get an extra $200 they feel dissed over

Take LSU, with Garrett Nussmeier. He's the exception. He sat 3 years at LSU, 2 behind Jaden Daniels. He showed out some when he did play, so he would have been a coveted portal player. Probably 90% of guys transfer after throwing for 300+ yards in the SEC Championship, only to still be behind someone going into next year.
That wouldn't affect LSU when they had Daniels, but last year we'd have really been scrambling for a QB instead of having an experienced redshirt junior.

Forced more high school kids to go to lower schools since many coaches rely on the portal for recruiting.

Thats only temporary....the Alabama's of the world will find a way to outclass everyone else. They always have and the reason is simple its what their expectations are....

It has for me for certain. Last years Sugar Bowl may well be the last UGA game I attend in person....I will keep my season tickets as long as they don't cost me anything and I can sale them for what I have in them or more but there is simply not the same connection, for me, that there once was. For me its the portal and the fact that a player you hated last season because he played for your rival is now one you live because he is on your team. That is just silly...as Jerry Seinfeld said at that point you are really just pulling for laundry. Like most SEC football fans I do not have any ties to the program I root for other than it being in the same state that I am from. I would imagine the passion will remain higher for alumni and parents of students etc but for the sidewalk fans. and that is the majority of college football fans, the connection has been severely severed I think...

Same. I still watch the games on TV but I gave my season tickets up a few years ago. The time investment of tailgating and going to the games in person is just not worth it anymore to watch a team that I know the vast majority are only there because they got paid. Yes I know they got paid in the past but most likely not at this level so they at least had some affinity for the school they attended.

Vegas Sportsbooks are predicting the following over/under win totals for SEC teams in the 2025 season:
Alabama, Georgia, and Texas: 9.5 wins
LSU, Ole Miss, and Tennessee: 8.5 wins
Auburn, Missouri, South Carolina, and Texas A&M: 7.5 wins
Florida and Oklahoma: 6.5 wins
Arkansas: 5.5 wins
Kentucky and Vanderbilt: 4.5 wins
Mississippi State: 3.5 wins
Vegas thinks there is quite a bit of parity in the conference this year. Nil/Portal caused this. In past years you could expect Alabama and Georgia to romp through the conference and meet up in Atlanta for a big showdown. Sometimes LSU or Florida would replace them.
It may turn out that way again this year and in years to come. We will see how that works out. For this year fans of other teams that have not been in the historic top 10 percent of good college football teams have more of a reason to watch the season unfold. That is good for the sport.
If this new parity is real it is no wonder traditional powers hate the Portal/Nil era of college football.

The only reason we are where we are is because it is now another source of income for attorneys. And they don't care where it leads as long as they can make money off of it. They hide behind the guise of the players being taken advantage of, but they don't care about the players other than to make money off of them. The players are pawns.
In the landmark Ed O'Bannon case which opened all this up, O'Bannon made $15,000 in the settlement, the attorneys were awarded 46 million dollars.

This is why I am not a fan of the U.S. Congress stepping in to sort this out. They are almost all attorneys.

The problem isn't NIL. The problem is the transfer portal at the highest levels..
At the lower levels, across the board in all sports, the transfer portal is great. I have several friends with children who are college athletes. FCS - D2 small D1 type schools.. For them, the transfer portal is great.
but there is a simple fix..
Bring back the "sit out for 1 year" clause.. (perhaps 14 months to avoid spring transfers suiting up in the playoffs..
That one simple change would bring college football and college sports back closer to where it was 5 - 10 - 20 - 30 years ago..

It's pushed me towards enjoying pro sports more, which I would have never said 10 years ago. If I'm going to watch pros, I want to watch the real pros. Not the ones pretending to be college students.

Correct they are doing the same thing to the whole country that is happening in NCAA sports. And it is on both sides of the aisle. The left is almost totally corrupt, the right is only like 2/3 to 3/4 corrupt. We are fooked.

Well said. My passion is very low. Yes I will watch games on Saturday because I love football but I pay no attention to recruiting any more. When a kid commits I could care less because 50% of the time a "respect my decision" tweet is coming any way or they will be in the portal in a year anyway. Or kids like the Michigan QB who was 100% committed until UM offered him 12m.
My team had a great portal class but you know what I realize not a single one of those kids cares about the State of Louisiana or LSU. They are a hired gun.
Now if LSU is competing for a NC sure we will all enjoy it. Sure Burrow was a grad transfer and we enjoyed that but when freshman is making more money never taking a snap than an NFL rookie. TJ Finley and Carson Beck is a text book example what is wrong with College football.
I simply just dont care anymore. Heck LSU is playing at Clemson next year and hour away from me (I live in Athens GA) and I am 50-50 in attending. Which 10 years ago was a no brainer.
