Should Modern Bowl Games Even Count Towards a Teams Record?

Unless a team makes the playoffs, today’s bowl games feature mass opt outs and transfers. In many match ups, the two teams that play are not the same teams that played during the regular season. In most cases for power 4 teams, non playoff bowls are now glorified 2nd team scrimmages to help prepare for the next season. We don’t count preseason basketball scrimmages towards a team’s record. Should we do the same in football?

Alabama loses to unranked Michigan in a bowl game and suddenly Bammers want bowl games to not count.

Sad.

Alabama holds the record for most bowl game appearances and most bowl game wins of any program. It would hurt Alabama worse than anyone.

But outside of the playoffs, current bowl games are scrimmages. It will be hard for anyone to disagree with this.

What would you call SEC vs Non-P4 games early in the season?

Bowl games played/won is the most meaningless stat in CFB.

1. In the old days, they were truly treated as exhibitions and many teams (Notre Dame being one) often opted not to play in them.

2. Are we going to count going to the Jack-in-the Box bowl the same as going to the Sugar Bowl? Simply counting bowl appearances and wins doesn’t account for the quality of the bowl.

3. Also, up through the 1970s only 20-30 teams would get a bowl invite. Now we have the “Jimmy Kimmel” Bowl and nearly 70 teams getting invites.

4.. Throw in the Playoff now and bowls are back to being absolutely meaningless unless it’s a part of the playoff.

5.. Also, nowadays you’ve got some of the top players opting out… again adding to the fact they are meaningless.

Alabama fans need to be protected. I love that bowl loss hurt them so much. More fanbases need that feeling back. Auburn has won a bowl game twice since 2012. Twice!! I remember when everyone said Auburn couldnt stop Larry Johnson and Penn State. We held his arse to like 60 yards and Larry Johnson bitching after the game. There was so much pride in that game.

You can’t win or lose a bowl game if you don’t get invited to one. Auburn agrees with me, they were an early adopter to not playing in bowl games.

Is it a game or an exhibition? Games count as games. Shocking, I know.

Playing to win is the only choice for competitors. The games not mattering is baloney.

That Michigan win mattered and Bama's loss should sting.
