Wonder what would’ve happened if we didn’t get down 27-3

Should also point out that, so far, the only lower seeds to really put up a fight were the SEC teams (Ole Miss and Arkansas)

Yes we like great teams playing because that means we get the best teams. Unlike the casuals that want all 16 seeds in the Final Fours, ww know they tune out immediately and it just makes it unfun.
Now you can have a team say like Arkansas who was seeded low and is playing hot thats fine. But having Saint Peter's and Loyola Chicago while great "stories" isnt geear basketball

Well, it's happening.
Crazy how well the seeding held up this year.

Looks like the women's tourney usually goes , all top seeds usually advance.

And both led for most of their games until choking down the stretch

This will probably be the new norm with NIL. The top seeds hoard the talent now. These smaller schools don’t have the ability to keep their stars.

I don't think upsets and Cinderellas are definitely dead. Single-elimination basketball tournaments are conducive to upsets.
HOWEVER, you are right that NIL has changed the game. Alabama kept the core of their surprise F4 team together because of NIL. They're back in the E8 because they retained a few guys, added a few other veterans from the portal, and supplemented with HS recruits. NIL made that happen.
The game changed when you made pay for play above board in basketball. Most football schools were not touching serious basketball recruiting because of how seedy the recruiting climate is in HS basketball. Now that risk is gone.
Furthermore, it helped improve the quality of play amongst major conference opponents. Now teams don't lose every NBA caliber player on their roster each Spring and when you do lose one then you can backfill with a veteran who fits your scheme in the portal.
The peak of Cinderalla-ism was the HS draft eligibility NBA and one-and-done eras. The lower level teams had talent deltas but they weren't as steep as today.

There are positives. Everyone ‘belongs’. No Cinderellas who will get exposed or whose luck will run out. Good odds for everyone, no heavy favorites. Wide open tournament at this point

Kenpom has all teams inside top 10. The only teams missing are the #8 and #10 who were eliminated by teams in the within this group.
Probably one of the most accurately seeded tournaments ever.

Nah. 2009 was very similar
1vs 2
1vs 3
1vs 2
1vs 3
Only non 1 seed to make final 4 that year was Michigan St

I think this is a lot of it, but that NIL has really hurt the lower level teams who used to be able to grow and develop players over a couple years.
Now those players if they develop are gone before they can gel and make a run as upperclassmen.

Good call out. Only 12 total games that year when the lower seeded team won, and 8 of those were when the seeding was a single digit between them.
So far this year, there are 11 games where the lower seed won.

And then 2008 ended up with all four #1 seeds in the FF.

For some reason a lot of people gave them a lot of credit for winning a bad Big East.
