Tragic news: Kirby Smart’s father, Sonny, passed away early this morning after complications from surgery from a fall he suffered on New Year’s Eve in New Orleans.

Prayers for the Smart family.

Doctors told the family the morning of the game that he wasn't expected to make it. That must have been incredibly difficult

I can’t imagine that Kirby really wanted to be coaching a football game on Thursday afternoon.

I wonder how rescheduling impacted this? I wonder if he would have been doing what he was doing to break his hip if the game had gone on as scheduled.

Probably. The fall happened on NYE. The attack happened at 315AM New Years Day. He had already fallen before the attack.

I revel in bashing Smart as a the coach of a rival team, but this is awful. Prayers to the entire Smart and University of Georgia family.

Fell and fractured his hip. Died after hip surgery

"According to research, the one-year mortality rate for elderly patients following hip fracture surgery is typically between 17% and 25%, meaning that roughly 17-25% of older individuals who undergo hip fracture surgery may die within a year after the procedure. "

Prayers for Kirby and family
