It's been 84 years since Alabama last opened SEC play vs. a team ranked in the top 5

That year was 1940, when the Crimson Tide lost to #5 Tennessee, 27-12, at Legion Field in Birmingham.
The only other year Alabama did the same was in the previous year of 1939, also losing to #5 Tennessee (Alabama was ranked #8) in Knoxville, 21-0.
Other tidbits..........
--- Second-ranked Georgia will be the third time in the Tide's illustrious history that they've played a top 5 ranked opponent to open their SEC season. The other two times were the games mentioned above vs. Tennessee.
--- Under Saban, Alabama went 5-1 vs. UGA when both teams were ranked in the Top 5.
--- This will be the first time since 2013 that Alabama's opened SEC play vs. a top 10-ranked team (Texas A&M, won by the Tide, 49-42).
--- In Nick Saban's 17-year run as HC of Alabama, the Tide played an un-ranked SEC opponent in 10 of 17 years to open league play. The Tide opened conference play with a team in the top 10 twice: at #10 Arkansas in 2010 winning 24-20, and at #6 Texas A&M in 2013, winning 49-42.
--- During Saban's career at Alabama, only 7 times did the Tide play an opponent in which both teams were ranked in the top 5 during the regular season. The Tide own a 5-2 mark in these games.
------ Saban had an overall 26-9 record against top 5 teams with a 24-7 record in which both teams were ranked inside the top 5. This includes all post-season games.

That’s what happens when you go to the playoff so many times.

The last regular season matchup of Bama and UGA was in 2020.....#2 Alabama defeated #3 Georgia, 41-24, in Tuscaloosa. UGA led at halftime, but blew it in the 2nd half.

Whatever they've done seems to be working out really well for them.

Gotta be honest. I care more about our record against teams who FINISH in the top 5 than I do about our record against teams who just so happen to be highly ranked when we play them.

Hmm, I seem to recall something else happening about 84-85 years ago, and no...I don't mean Hitler invading Poland. What could that have been? Oh well..

This. Had heard today that in 17 years at Bama, he only had 18 conference losses. That was insane to me, as well.
