Just nine years ago in 2015, the highest paid college football coach in America was Nick Saban at Alabama. He was paid $7,087,481. Again, that was in 2015.

Today, in 2024, 25 HCs get a minimum salary of $6.2 million, with 19 of 25 getting paid more than Nick Saban did just 9 years ago. Talk about inflation!!

1. Kirby Smart - Georgia - $13 million
2. Dabo Swinney - Clemson - $11.5M
3. Lincoln Riley - USC - $11M
4. Steve Sarkisian - Texas - $10.3M
5. Kalen DeBoer - Alabama - $10M

6. Mike Norvell - FSU - $9.8M
7. Brian Kelley - LSU - $9.5M
8. Ryan Day - Ohio State - $9.5M
9. Lane Kiffin - Ole Miss - $9M
10. Josh Heupel - Tennessee - $9M

11. Mark Stoops - Kentucky - $9M

12. James Franklin - Penn State - $8.5M
13. Brent Venables - Oklahoma - $8.2M
14. Mario Cristobal - Miami - $8M
15. Mike Gundy - Oklahoma State - $7.75M

16. Luke Fickell - Wisconsin - $7.6M
17. Billy Napier - Florida - $7.3M
18. Kirk Ferentz - Iowa - $7M
19. Dan Lanning - Oregon - $7M
20. Matt Rhule - Nebraska - $6.78M

21. Hugh Freeze - Auburn - $6.73M
22. Kyle Wittingham - Utah - $6.5M
23. Sam Pittman - Arkansas - $6.46M
24. Shane Beamer - South Carolina - $6.4M

25. Bret Bielema - Illinois - $6.2M

Mike Elko has a base of $7M.

Dang, Lanning is $7M a year, and he refuses to leave Oregon or interview for other jobs? That’s wild.

Ridiculous.

There should be a $2-3 million cap. Even that is insane.

I don't think there's any bubble to pop. There will always be someone willing to pay to win. Some willing to pay to turn the ball over.

Bigger ripoff

Dabo because he’s never going to adapt to the modern game or Stoops who has never done anything?

I think this must be 2023 data. Drinkwitz’s contract extension signed at the end of 2023 guarantees him $9 million for 2024 plus incentives.

Out of all those millions dumped on coaches, only one current coach has any real ROI, and that's Kirby. I guess you could argue Dabo, but he's no longer a net asset to Clempson.

Looking at this list tells me one thing: I went into the wrong profession.

Interesting. 5 of the 6 highest paid coaches in the SEC are also 5 of the 6 teams still in the playoff hunt.

Lanning also gets Nike stock if he sticks around long enough, according to various sources. So it would take a lot more than just an offer for higher than 7 mil.

All inflation has been crazy these last couple of years but college football salaries is probably even more so. Everybody wants the next nick saban and is afraid to lose him to the next team, so schools are just paying dumb amounts at this point. Jimmy sexton just laughing all the way to the bank.

It already has popped and they are just starting to realise it. Boomers were the big spenders at games and a lot of them have aged out.
