@PeteThamel
Sources: Oklahoma has agreed to a new six-year contract for coach Brent Venables. The new six-year deal includes a significant raise for Venables, and there’s been an uptick in overall program commitment as OU heads to the SEC.

Amazing how stuff leaks out lol. This is from someone at the BOR meeting and its not announced yet. But this is a great move he’s done a lot to rebuild what LR tore down.

Good to lock him up in case USC comes calling again

They'll be regretting that extension in a couple of years

Bold to give a man who lost to Kansas an extension

As an A&M fan, I have no room to judge a contract extension, but I think I would have waited to see how this opening season or 2 goes.
Not too many Kansas’s or Baylor’s on that schedule.

16-10 Head Coaching Record
0-2 Bowl Games
Extension worthy?

Looks like Oklahoma and Texas are going to have another pair long time coaching adversaries.
The series has had some great ones with great back stories. This one won't have the back story of some of the others... but it ought to provide some quality contests in the Cotton Bowl.

It will be interesting to see the opinion on this next year. If I remember correctly OU is going into this season with a new OC and DC, new QB and an entirely new offensive line. Not really a recipe for success.

Sooners don’t like losing.
If they’re 3rd or lower in any SEC schedule format I’ll be surprised.

Was that necessary? Not trolling.Do you really have that much faith in him right now?

Someone at A&M has infiltrated the OU BOR apparently. This feels a lot like the Sumlin and Jimbo mistakes.

The extension itself is meaningless if he doesn't work out. Only the amount of the buyout matters.

Do they have A&M whose had a worse record than us the past two years?

Mistake by Oklahoma. Venables needs to prove he can win consistently before a new contract. Saban and Smart are the only two coaches that can trusted to win in this league and one just retired.

The rest of the SEC approves this deal. Go ahead and make it a lifetime deal.
I would have waited to see how he does with in helmet communications and not able to steal signals anymore before giving him a new deal

If you don’t understand what Riley left then you’ll never understand anything about that period. There was no defense “when” LR was there and even then some average players left so was bare bones.
LR fell down more each year. Bob handed him a title team. He lost close in playoffs with no D to GA. Then he lost playoffs big. Then he didn’t make playoffs. Then he didn’t even win Conf. And when snaking out he wasn’t going to even address players but Bob forced him to. Then he snuck out in wee hours. And took all the O talent with him. That is just some basic stuff but way more happened where LR torched the program.
OU lost both CW and SR, 2 QBs who were 5*’s. And many others. BV had to come in middle of recruiting period and hire new staff. And salvage a class. And find a QB. And OC and DC and on and on.
LR was given a great program. BV was not. If you even knew the obstacles BV has overcome you’d not post so rashly. BV was always building for SEC not for B12. And took his lumps. He has had 3 top 10 classes. Yet he came in late with gutted team and still turned a top 10 class that first year. But freshman and systems take time
He created the SOUL program and its unique in CFB.
The first year will be hard due to schedule but thats ok and every OU fan knows this. But BV is building the trenches and adding depth which is needed in SEC. Fans are all looking forward to new tailgates and traditions. And of course the great football.
This is a great extension and also shows recruits the school believes in their HC so they can too. People forget recruits (and their parents) want some future stability when choosing schools.

Agreed. Had he never coached at OU would he have been there number one choice two years ago with no HC experience? They act like he’s very Switzer just because he’s one of them, but he has done nothing to earn an extension. I have to imagine this is just for recruiting stability
No publication even has him in the top half of SEC coaches.

No where is mediocrity rewarded more than college football coaching
