Travaris best attribute is his ability to recruit. I definitely think he can help retain talent. However, I’m not 100% sold on his play calling abilities.
As DC at South Carolina his defense was
2016: 53rd
2017: 25th
2018: 68th
2019: 53rd
2020: 108th
He is opposite of Phil Parker who routinely has great defenses but you may question his recruiting.

So now that it looks like TRob is staying at UGA, are you going to apologize to the rest of the board for being a giant bitch about the entire situation and your deep desire to be right and make us naysayers grovel at your feet?
Why would I need to do that? Should CKD apologize with me because he apparently shared my view on the subject and wanted to retain the guy.
See here is the problem. This entire thing isn't just me, there are other guys and all we wanted was to at least try to keep TRob because we knew his value.
We were attacked and insulted for it.
So when CKD agrees with us and is trying to bring TRob back we make reference to the attacks. Instead of people saying "fair enough, TRob has value you guys were right" or "Boz wasn't lying when he said CKD was trying to bring TRob back"..
What we get is more attacks because how dare we take this so seriously to defend ourselves
Come on man

I mean we had a guy go off on Boz and then me for being happy Boz leaked we are still in it for T-Rob like the coach is some bum.. yet Kirby apparently saw so much value he jumped at the chance and gave him the Co title
Because none of it is important.

Ah. Makes sense. I take lengthy breaks from this board, it gets way too Finebaum-esque with people trying to out hot-take each other.
Carry on then Ystar

You can't really look at SC days.. considering who he was coaching under. They had some good moments that season. Robinson definitely has called good games this year, but his main issue is the run game.

Honestly I don't know enough about potential candidates to have a real strong opinion about it. Keeping TRob for a year just for smooth transition purposes would have been nice, but his stint at South Carolina was less than stellar despite having Muschamp there to hold his hand, so I'm not too torn up about it if it doesn't work out that way. The Chargers are about to get a new staff, so our old friend Derrick Ansley could be available. Zach Arnett had some pretty salty defenses at State and he's unemployed. They're both young and know the lay of the land in the SEC. Beyond that, I've got no clue.

Need a win with this DC hire. Phil Parker aint it...I don't give a shite what PFF says. BIG 10 offenses are awful. We need a guy with ties to SEC recruiting. Proven guy. Good recruiter.
edit: I meant offenses...not defenses

I don’t really want Parker, but Big 10 defenses aren’t exactly awful. Michigan’s defense was damn good. As was OSU, PSU and Iowa imo.

I think you can look at his resume at USCe. It's a datapoint in his career.
So we are ok saying he is a great recruiter and a good playcaller but yet he didn't have the resources at USCe and it was more Muschamp?
We also don't know what exactly went on with our defense this past year. We have Steele who was the DC, you have remarks from Saban saying that he had to put more effort on the defensive side of the ball this year and a Lane Kiffin troll job where he said T-Rob was calling plays.
I'm not sure anyone outside of our staff can accurately portray how T-Rob did this year.

Yeah, I mean, I'd get on board with it, but I think giving him the keys to the defense would be a questionable (at best) move. I'd get behind it, and I really like TRob as a locker room guy and DB coach, but there's not a lot to indicate that he'd get the results we want from the defense.

That was my bad. Meant offenses. Yea Michigan's D was legit and same with Ohio State but I feel like Iowa and Penn State's success on defense probably had more to do with how bad the BIG 10 offenses were.

I think we're looking at a sliding scale here. At some point you have diminishing returns on the defense if you are unable to recruit good defenders.
You you want a C+ coach with a A+ roster or an A+ coach with a C+ roster.
I lean towards having elite players. Less needs to go perfect for them to make plays or get stops. The ideal hire is a good play caller, developer, and recruiter...particularly a good recruiter in this region of the country where our bread is buttered. Alabama, Florida, and Georgia

You'd rather have TRob as DC than Schumann?
I’d be ecstatic if we got Schumann. I just don’t see why it would happen. If Schumann wants to come home he’s probably better served waiting until DeBoer either gets fired or goes to the NFL. Hes never getting fired working for Kirby. He’s going to be a hot commodity for HC positions in the next 1-3 years.

Portraying defense as a Muschamp problem is kind of a weird position to take though. His failures as a HC have never been related to defense. He's just a shitty gameday coach who can't put a remotely competent offense on the field. His defenses at Florida were very good under Broseph Quinn and Durkin.

Ultimately if DeBoer is as good as he's supposed to be on the offensive side then we won't need a dominant defense. I know ppl wanted murder ball back but how'd that go this past season?
Not speaking to you specifically but just speaking in general.
That 2020 offense is the dream. If we can put something like that on the field annually then we just need a top 25 defense.

I don't disagree nor expect a 2011, 2016 level defense...but I don't think we really need to take a step back there either, not much of one anyway. He'll be playing talented rosters 10x a year down here instead of 5x a year up there. There's less margin for error
