The 4 best teams… for TV

Disagreeing with the committee is basically wanting the BCS format back in place. It was decided long ago by the powers that be and schools that this would be the system. “Fair” would be Florida st getting in over Bama. But this system isn’t about fairness. It’s about getting the 4 best teams that will have the most eyeballs on TV screens for the playoffs. Competitive games is what the goal is. The committee had to make a decision and they left out the team winning without one of the best payers in the country. No one should be surprised at this outcome. Bama had the best win of the weekend and FSU looked boring.
TV execs don’t want boring. Ultimately they have to put entertaining games on tv and the committee as well as ESPN does not want to take chances on a team that is missing their explosive QB.
As an LSU fan, the committee made the right decision for entertainment but you could say they made the wrong decision for “fairness” but it was never about that in the first place.

This sport gave up being about pure "athletics" and moved into entertainment long ago

Someone on ESPN said yesterday that if Deion was the FSU HC then FSU would have been selected. The rest of the panel agreed.
Viewership and brand absolutely play a factor.
I've read and seen a lot of sports media say "do you really think they're going to leave Saban out of the CFP?"
I'm not saying Bama isn't deserving, but story line and entertainment value certainly plays a part.

Next time this happens the coaches will blatantly lie about the severity of the injury. I would do it even if it were obvious just to make a point.
Given now that we are expanding to 12 it won’t be as critical.

exactly. it's not about "deserving". it's about ad revenue. anyone thinking otherwise is fooling themselves.

it's a gigantic factor. they will put in the teams that have the best chance of selling ad time. No one wants to see FSU with a backup QB in the playoff other than FSU fans. The playoff comm/ESPN/advertisers want to see compelling competitive games.

The media has been salivating for years to put Texas in the playoffs. “They’re back” every fricking year. The narrative started several weeks ago with the talk of how the committee would view the injury to the Florida St QB.
Bama created the opportunity when they beat Georgia. If Georgia had won it would have been the 4 undefeated teams and the committee would be touting how we’ve never had that before.

I did. What a story that would be. And I’m not so sure they couldn’t hang even with their backup. They would certainly give Michigan or Washington all they could handle and more.
That defense was special.

They might have even put ohio state in over FSU at that point IMO.

FSU vs Alabama in a play in game this Saturday. Who you got?

Lets swap the schedules and say FSU never loses Travis, do they lose a game against Texas, Ole Miss, LSU, or Georgia?
On the flip side, where is Bama’s loss on FSUs schedule?
The difference between the 4th ranked schedule and 55th should have weight. Does anyone dispute that?

Yep. Watched the FSU Louisville game and was thinking FSU’s out even if they win. Defense might win championships but it doesn’t hold viewers.

No one knows the answer to that. I would guess alabama because FSU doesn't have jordan travis and I watched them struggle with florida with their backup playing.
alabama also struggled with auburn and if not for a miracle muffed punt and a miracle 4th and forever, they'd have lost that game.
but none of that matters. bama beat georgia and when that happened, FSU had no shot of getting in.

So is this a ne thing started this year? I mean last year putting Bama in over TCU would have been, according to your theory, a no brainer. Yet they didn't, hmmm.

it should, I agree. but if alabama doesn't beat georgia, they are left out.
