That is surprising, he is perfect for the system if he learned how to play better defense.
"learning to play" defense was not his problem. It's that he simply does not have the speed or quickness to do so. That cannot be learned, mitigated a little, but he just does not have the ability, nor IMO, can he develop it.

I disagree, there is technique to playing defense that can close the talent/athleticism gap. How to use your body, how to get wide, better timing, keeping your feet in good position...etc. A lot of the time with Walters I would see him overstep with the wrong foot and his man would immediately attack that foot and go right by him. That's a technique problem, not necessarily a speed/agility problem. He also gave up his chest too much and would get called for fouls he didn't think he deserved.

Yeah Walters isn't a high major at least not at this point so I can see why he transferred

This is true but I always saw when he would do it as almost naturally clumsy. There seem to be some guys that kinetically don’t seem to be able to step without thinking no matter how much they drill. I’m not him or around him so obviously that’s just my assessment, but that’s how it always looked to me.

It’s like John Cena in wrestling. You’ll hear him and others talk about how he has a crazy work ethic but he’s also naturally clumsy and has two left feet. So he has to put in a lot of work and stick to the basics to be serviceable

Crazy. He just shot 39% as a freshman for a Final 4 team. He will have his pick of P5 schools

He is naturally a tad clumsy, but it doesn't help that he is 6'10. He may need more time to get the footwork right. I think he could get it if he worked hard enough.

Well, Griffin's pursuers since December have been Kansas and Houston. Don't think Kansas is in that league. SMU, in his hometown Dallas, is also a possibility as they move to the ACC. I'm sure Andy Kennedy would be happy to get him, but...

A buddy of mine has had a hunch all along it'd be Florida (even earlier in the season), just because Walters keeps mentioning that he grew up a fan, and they run a similar system.

Not sure of their situation or if they'd even take him, but it does sort of make sense.

ETA: nm, I re-read this and see you were talking about Griffen, not Walters. My bad.

IDK where to post anymore because I'm old and confused, but in case anyone is still perusing this thread, Oumar Ballo is transferring to Indiana,

I have to wonder if Oats realized he is just not athletic enough to defend at the level

He was half way to a 3&D guy.

Think he could be a big time contributor eventually but it’s NIL era and that’s not how this works anymore.

Perimeter D? Not so much. But what a guy can provide as a freshman versus an upper classman can vary wildly. I’m sad to see him go

Rylan was crystal balled to Kansas earlier today. Both have money.

Feels like IU, Kansas, and Texas are getting mentioned more than anyone with top transfers this year. NIL budgets must be flowing there.

Without Bediako to defend the rim we were such a mess on the interior defensively that I can’t really hold it against anyone for deficiencies, especially a freshman.

Not that any of them were great in that phase, but they were all asked to do more than they should’ve been because of the roster.

Certainly would’ve liked to see him back, but I’m way past getting personally invested in players in this era so good luck to him but I hope he leaves the conference.
