Concerning the NIL situation, and football for now. Clearly it’s the damn Wild West and will quickly become unsustainable. I think it’s good the players are getting some say and getting paid above the table which will create greater parity and with the expanded playoff, I think CFB will become wildly unpredictable in the future and that’s good for the sport overall.

That’s if it doesn’t just become a few schools buying every good player. I think we are at about 20-25 million for a top class right now. (Those who know feel free to say so)

So you are looking at 60-80 million per year in player payroll alone. Probably 125 million a year in expenses to b competitive. I thinks that’s about the SEC teams will make yearly or close to it, the Big Ten too.
So that’s who can play the game.

Only the super conference teams.
So we are leaving the NCAA and the super conference model is coming one way or the other.

It’s doesn’t mean other teams can’t compete in playoffs etc but they will obviously be at a disadvantage.

So what the rules going to be? Are we going to make them or is the Big ten?

Salary Cap?
Recruiting rules ?
Other rules?
Non conference affiliated refs?

The wheels came off about 2- 3 years ago. Only thing left to do is to enjoy that coasting feeling before reality sets in.

All the boo hooing by coaches like Dabo and Saban about NIL would be amusing if it was not so pathetic.

There is a s**t ton of money poured into college football from TV and fans spending and now players are getting some with NIL. Up until now it was spent to wildly over pay coaches, build Taj Mahal facilities on campuses, and hire more and athletic department staffers (usually friends or relations of the coaches/admins). Not to mention paying off the recently fired wildly overpaid coaches.

The pay to players is not being done in a fair and equitable manner, if you look at the people involved; unscrupulous boosters, AD’s doing what the boosters tell them, wildly overpaid coaches wanting to keep their stack of money, incompetent NCAA personnel, etc…

This is exactly what any reasonable person would think will happen.

That does not mean we should limit, nor take money away from players, through caps, or limits, or rules to force the money to administrators. However, again, when you have so many pigs already at the trough they will fight to keep their stack of money.

Look what SMU did to try to compete against the money schools back in the day and it got them the death penalty. Football has been screwed up for a long time and now that an equalizer has shown up the teams who are good are yelling rape when the big programs have been raping college football forever.

Let all teams compete as equal as possible and maybe we’ll wind up with a decent product instead of the same crap every year.

Post season football has become boring, the bowls used to mean something but with opt outs it’s just practice games for the next group.

Maybe the expanded playoffs will bring some life back in to football.

The thing that will break it apart is when the lesser sports like softball and gymnastics start suing schools because football players are getting so much more money. They will claim discrimination and college sports will become entirely unaffordable overnight. Just wait.

You are way overestimating the value of these players. Only about 15% of them are "elite or prime" level players. the bottom half of the scholarship players wont pull a lot of demand for dollars.

Do you realize this whole pay for play is so unfair to players and let them make money on NIL is a power grab to neutralize the SEC. I’ll explain my conspiracy theory. For years the big market Northern teams big 10, Notre Dame, and USC along with Texas ruled the roost. They had the TV market and the money to stack players. Then came scholarship limits and cable TV (espn). The SEC started expansion and pushed those teams to curb. It is those media types and legislators that have pushed the NIL to check the SEC. Tin foil hat my friend think about. I don’t disagree with NIL it’s the way it is being used that I disagree with.

NIL is here to stay.
The portal is what needs to change.

If you are a starter for X number of games
you have to sit out a year if you transfer

If you make over X amount in NIL,
you have to sit out a year

or something like that

So if teams want to make sure a kid doesn’t transfer.. you pay him enough so he can’t

Or the original team has the right to match the offer.. so restricted free agency

But this would still allow backup players to transfer for playing time.. which imo is a very good thing

You have to cap it across the board in some form. Plus you have to regulate the portal and transfer. Otherwise teams will stock pile (ones that can afford to) and players will just jump at the next big thing.

This was not thought out well enough. No regulation at all. Kinda like all these EV's without infrastructure. College athletics was not ready for this.

I think that if you accept over X amount of money in NIL, you have to pay your own scholarship as the student athlete then. Lessons to be had. You learn the value of the dollar kicking out the biggest checks of their life to date. Two it’s their first “business” decision so there is a little business acumen that develops. Three that scholarship can then be repurposed, especially if the kid is already covering that easily.

How are we this far in into the NIL era and people still don’t know what the frick it is?

It has nothing to do with the NCAA nor is it a salary.

This has been needing to happen. I think the quality of the game will improve when the refs are not trying to tilt the game in a certisn direction. You can turn on the TV and watch certain SEC teams every week get help from the refs. Bama at home and UF at home are two schools that get the most help when playing at home.

We've had non-conference affiliated refs in basketball for as long as I can remember but that doesn't stop this board from bitching about SEC refs.

That's because this league is lucky enough to get the same ones who screw it up all the time. Doug Shows comes to mind.

I’m this scenario, imposing any additional rules when others do not just served to constrain and weaken you.

We ARE the NCAA. We're not leaving, it's an organization comprised of member schools.

The best you can hope for is rebrand.
