The record set for CBS was up 39% from last year's opening week 1 game.

Disney is in dire financial straits (they own ABC/ESPN) and it's quite apparent that ESPN's production quality trails that of CBS.

On the other hand, the Colorado@TCU game broadcast on FOX Sports took in over 7,260,000 viewers, topping even the CBS broadcast. Interest in Deion Sanders was apparently very high.

I can’t imagine even considering myself wasting time to watch that matchup.

That’s impressive considering all the blockbuster games that were played that day.

Spectrum is in contract disputes with ESPN. A ton of people simply couldn’t watch other games.

CBS did not broadcast a Week 1 football game in 2022.

The FSU@LSU game last year was broadcast by ESPN and it drew 7.55 million viewers, the 2nd-most watched game of that week last year (Notre Dame/Ohio State was #1 at 10.53 million).

FWIW, most watched games from 2022 each week....

Week 2: Alabama/Texas - 10.6 million
Week 3: Penn State/Auburn - 4.05 mill
Week 4: Notre Dame/UNC - 3.46 mill
Week 5: Alabama/Arkansas - 5.38 mill
Week 6: Texas A&M/Alabama - 7.15 mill
Week 7: Alabama/Tennessee - 11.56 mill
Week 8: Syracuse/Clemson - 4.75 mill
Week 9: Ohio State/Penn State - 8.27 mill
Week 10: Tennessee/Georgia - 13.06 mill
Week 11: Alabama/Ole Miss - 8.71 mill
Week 12: Ohio State/Maryland - 6.60 mill
Rivalry Week: Michigan/Ohio State - 17.14 mill

The most watched games of all of 2022:

Michigan–Ohio State (FOX) 17.1 million
Tennessee–Georgia (CBS) 13.1 million
Alabama-Tennessee (CBS) 11.6 million
LSU-Georgia (SEC Championship) (CBS) 10.9 million
Purdue-Michigan (Big Ten Championship) (FOX) 10.7 million
Alabama-Texas (FOX) 10.6 million
Notre Dame-Ohio State (ABC) 10.5 million
Kansas State–TCU (Big 12 Championship) 9.4 million
Alabama-Ole Miss (CBS) 8.7 million
Ohio State-Penn State (FOX) 8.3 million

Ohio State vs. name any opponent draws big ratings and is the main reason CBS dumped the SEC for the B1G. Kevin Warren did us right.

Ohio State is the most watched team in the country. They could line up against Bishop Sycamore and get 5 million views.

After reading through this thread, essentially, the thread title is misleading and missing context.

Ohio State / Indiana was pretty much only relatively close game going when it was airing. All the other games in that time slot were blowouts by the second quarter. Of course people tuned in over other games.

The CBS contract with the SEC whereby CBS gets first pick doesn't start until week 3; however, since losing the rights to the US Open, CBS has occasionally sublicensed a game in weeks 1 and 2 from ESPN; however, when they do this, it's never the first pick (usually the fourth, if I recall correctly). So that stat about CBS games in week one is not terribly meaningful.

ABC ratings were mostly hurt in week 1 b/c of the Spectrum blackout.
