I’m not gonna scroll every page to see if he’s been mentioned but any list of greatest Alabamians has to have Jeremiah Denton on it. He was a pilot and was shot down in Vietnam and spent eight years as a POW from ‘65 to ‘73.

He famously used eye blinks in Morse code to spell T-O-R-T-U-R-E when the Vietcong interviewed him for a propaganda video. Absolute badass.

We studied about him in SERE and Recondo School at Bragg back in the 70s ... you should read the Reader's Digest book about him, et al., titled "POW" about the Hanoi Hilton. One of my favorite all time books. Required reading for Paratroopers.

I will check it out. I remember him from when I was a kid in the 70s. He’s one of our favorite sons.

Very cool. M-T Catholic is a great school. When I coached HS track they always had a strong team, and a Catholic education is one of the best you can get.

I knew he was from Mobile but didn’t know the McGill-Toolen connection.

I saw a documentary on the Hanoi Hilton recently and how several of our POWs were doing a lot more than just saying they were being tortured. They were also sending messages about nearby targets for bombing missions and other intelligence. That part was classified until recently so only the "torture" message was announced after the war. Denton wasn't even allowed to talk about it in his book. I always thought there was more to the story. Now we know. Cool stuff.
