What's it going to take for the basketball team to kick it in gear?

Earlier in the game? Waiting until the second half to start playing isn't going to cut it during the tourney.

Now that the SEC regular season title is locked down, my opinion is best thing for the team would be to lose a close semi-final SEC tourney match as a wake up call.

You dont want to lose on Sunday in a big game if youve made it that far. Lose an upset against a hot team on Saturday and hopefully wakes the team up to what can happen, keeps them a little fresher going into the Tourney, but shouldnt drop them from a 1 seed.

Then come out on all cylinders in March Madness and do what this program has never done before.

They've won 17 of 19. Pretty sure that's kicking it into gear.

During the game not the year. How many times do you think they can come back from 17 down? If they continue to think they can they'll run into a team they can't. I'd rather them start earlier in the game.

Yep. We've been living dangerously the last three games. We were very fortunate to have won them. Gotta get better from three point range.

They can't shoot much worse from 3 than they have the past few games. The NCAAT is all about who you draw and when you get hot. After wrapping up the SEC championship, I don't even really care about the SEC tournament. This team will be remembered, like any team, for what it does in the NCAAT.

Yeah, honestly, I would like to rest up, if possible, before the NCAAT starts. I do want the one seed though. It's a tough balance. It's going to be hard to get untracked this Saturday. A&M is very much like Auburn and Tennessee defending the three point line.

Imo, that's a major reason we've backed up a little bit in our overall quality of play. This is the time of the season where players tend to backslide a little. Whether it's tired legs, or mental fatigue, it's not uncommon. It'd be nice if Oats could find a couple of days where they could just stay away from the gym, rest and relax while not thinking about basketball. I believe we'd see a difference.

It's going to be tough the rest of this week. On the road at Texas A&M for an 11 AM tip off. Maybe he needs to use the bench more in this game to get the regulars some more rest. Getting the number one seed and having a bye would be huge.

I would very much like to see a lot of our bench players get quite a bit of run. It'd be nice to get Burnett, Welch, Griffen, and Pringle starters minutes on Saturday. It would be greatly valuable to get one or more of them in a groove entering the conference tournament.

Burnett and Griffen were basically ineffective last night. They're very cold from three point distance. That has to change.

Its a different world when you are the best of the best, as we know all too well in Football. Additionally, the way the team has been villainized the last month gives teams even more motivation. We get everyone's best shot. That isn't to say that we don't need to play better, more complete games. But there is something to be said for winning tight games.

They seem to be a great second half team and really don't mind coming from behind. I'd think that's a good quality... They don't stress being down.

I don't really know how any specific player thinks, but my educated guess would be that other teams' players don't view Miller or anyone like him and the team in any way like the media or fans. To them, though not as much as coaches, the media is a necessary evil that they must accommodate. Fans pull for their teams and everyone else is evil and a cheat. (Of course it's actually true regarding UTn, AU, LSU, UGA, OSU, UTx, etc. :-))

Most are leery of, if not contemptuous of the media. They know what they are and that truth in such cases is an incidental matter.

They've all been covered and have seen many misrepresentations of the truth, even in puff pieces in their favor. I've heard them from time to time comment similarly in passing -"I/we know what the media is".

This is the sense that I've had. Sometimes a ball player needs a day or two away from the game to get his drive back. I see these guys as mentally/emotionally fatigued right now. The whole Miles matter has been a huge distraction. Added to that is the hard on that everyone has to beat us.

The fact that these guys keep winning is pretty amazing.

But, yeah, two days completely out of the gym running up to the SEC tourney, and again during the first two rounds of the NCCAs would probably be them a log of good.

Agreed. They're washed right now, and it's understandable. Tough schedule since November, the Miles stuff, etc. It's been a bear.

The fact that they've pushed through clear mental/physical fatigue in games where the opponent badly needed/wanted big games against them and found a way to win is impressive in and of itself. They are going to need entire games of that effort to win the games they want to in in a few weeks. Give them a rest then refocus.

These are all great points. Thanks for the perspective.

We've done it twice this year, including at the #1 team when they had that lead in the second half.

Ummm... Make more shots than the other team? It's not rocket science.
