I agree with you here. The fact we fired him and didn’t have a plan is insane. Hopefully our new prez and AD have a bit more sense

Absolute truth. Why waste so much money when there's no plan or vision to improve? I fear we're about to do the same thing again.

I don’t know about the plan nor the vision but generally speaking, I feel like the plan is JABA and will continue to be so. The PTB has been cursed out for decades, and I have heard for years by journalists such as Marcello speak out on what he encountered with the PTB, but the PTB doesn’t give up. It is easier to embrace we are JABA.
I participated in the Stop the Steele movement and I regret doing that. Steele would’ve been a temporary short term bridge hire that would’ve kept recruiting and most of the defensive coaches together. Steele was the stability to Gus’s storm. With that said I no longer think Steele is a factor.

With the NIL and transfer portal rules, is it still as critical to have a coach that is a top level recruiter? Just seems like if the top kids are going to the highest bidder, then that’s aspect of coaching will be diminished.
I do think the new rules allow us to get back quicker since you can fill roster holes via the transfer portal.

Im confused. Are you busting my balls or not? Are we still friends?
And now I agree with you about Deion. If - and in my mind it’s a huge if - he were willing to come here I think it wouldn’t work out for him or us.
quote:jang summed up my reaction as well. I just couldn’t accept that our brilliant post-Gustav plan was to promote a guy who was a miserable failure in his only previous HC stint, but in hindsight we would have been in a much better position now had the PTB gone through with it.

ETA: how ironic is it that one of this board’s previous fave HC targets, with the PTB’s choice as his DC, got beat at home last night by a team with our previous HC as their DC.

Well in truth they did have a plan. The plan was to fire Gus and hire Steele as a caretaker until they recouped the buyout money from Gus. They thought getting rid of Gus would be enough to make people ok with that idea. They weren't planning on the fans going scorched Earth and having to actually look for a new coach and it shows.

What are Trooper Taylor and Curtis Luper up to these days?

He’d probably recruit OL
I’m sure grimes would recruit OL but can he pull anyone worth a damn against Saban Kiffin and Kirby and Jimbo and now Tennessee ticking up. We’re a bottom dweller now and I’m not sure a coach no one has ever heard of will be able to go into a living room and win over little Timmy against our competition

OK. Im good now.
AU 251 went scorched earth on me this morning. Hurt my feelings. Im trying to recover.
I dont know if its even possible to fire a coach and already have some one lined up but it seems like the best bet for Auburn.
It was not pointed at me but I still dont believe the Steele stuff. IF it were true, god help us.

It is amazing how out of touch the board of trustees is with the Auburn fanbase. They hired Leath in secrecy “for the good of Auburn”, then paid him hush money to leave.
I don’t doubt they want the best for Auburn, but they seem to be dumb as shite football people in charge of this rodeo.

It doesn’t make any sense to have a replacement already lined up at this point. Any possible candidate we would want should be coaching their own team at this point and that should be their priority until the end of the regular season. With that being said it is much more common nowadays to fire a coach mid season due to the early signing period. Just look at Wisconsin who has never done it before this season.
It is probably best to go ahead and let go of Harsin after Ole Miss to at least signal to the fan base and recruits that we are ready to move on and start at least putting feelers out there so you can make a move as early as possible. The problem is we have no clear interim lined up. Most the staff is Harsin guys with no HC experience.
I have finally come around to the Lane Train though as my favorite replacement for Harsin. Still a good offensive coach, who likes the run ball (personally important to me), that has actually turned out a solid defense as well. He seems annoyed by the fan base, and lack of NIL support and media recognition in Oxford. Auburn should at least be an upgrade in all those categories.

Lee Ziemba is on the bunker saying hire Grimes
He is also basically saying let Harsin take all of the L’s this season instead of sending him to Mexico early.

Exactly. If recruiting is the lifeblood of a program, NIL is now the lifeblood of recruiting. We need someone that is a somewhat proven and consistent coach/coordinator and someone that can unite the money folks. If we can find that, I think we'll be in a good place.
