lsudave’s thread got me thinking.

2007 Florida comes to mind for me. God that LSU-Florida game was so good that year.

This one won't be the most talented to lose 4 games, but if you extend it to "most talented to have a badly losing record" or even just "to have a losing record...period", 2000 Bama has to be high in the discussion (3-8 record). While obviously ranked way too highly to begin the season (preseason #3), it was still a good roster that just completely went off the rails.

I’d put LSU 1998 up there too. Favorite to win the west, #6 nationally….to a 4-7 record. Yet they somehow smoked the SECW champs 42-6. Sports are weird

2016 LSU is the team that always comes to mind for me at lsu which underachieved the most.

Defense was loaded. Tre White, Jamal Adams, Duke Riley, Devin White, Devon Godchaux. All have been or still are NFL starters. Arden key before he got fat and when he looked like a future top 10 pick.

Fournette and Guice at RB

2016 LSU had an insane defense that had the season wasted because they waited to fire Miles midway through the year. Only lost 1 game by more than 6 points(10-0 against Bama)

And even that game was 0-0 heading into the 4th with a a very questionable TD run by Hurts being their only TD late

2003 Auburn

Basically the same team that went undefeated the next season and had 4 1st Round picks in the following draft.

He sure looked good opposite Nick Bosa last year in SF, good for 6.5 sacks.

This is a good one

First, they get upset in the swamp by Auburn, then lose to LSU after entering the 4th qtr with a 10 point lead. Then get absolutely road grated by UGA 42-30 in a game that wasn't nearly that close, then lost to a Mich team in the Capital one bowl that was beaten by App State. Meyer even admitted that season was his worst coaching job.

Was it though? I think his stint in Jacksonville might be the worst.

I wish we weren't but 2010 Carolina (9-5) was loaded with NFL talent - especially on defense.

16 players that went on to play in the NFL.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/south-carolina/2010-roster.html

NFL 2019 DPoY Stephon Gilmore. Super Bowl Champ A1shon Jeffery. Marcus Lattimore.

Melvin Ingram. Devin Taylor. Cliff Matthews. Travian Robertson.

The 2003 team also had Karlos Dansby, Dontarrious Thomas, and Reggie Torbor at linebacker

Has any SEC team ever been more dominant in the regular season?

2005 Tennessee. To go 5-6 with that roster was a disgrace.

LSU’s version of this is its 1989 team. Started the year ranked #7 and finished 4-7.

It was Tommy Hodson’s senior year. He actually had pretty good stats. I’ll never understand how that team underachieved that badly.

Ah, I forgot about that team. 1989 LSU would have given them a run for their money on underachiever status.
