Non-Auburn perspective: Best thing for them at this point—Should he stay or go?

I truly do not see an upgrade coming out of this. They get Steele or some B-list candidate. Freeze is a good coach but how does that help your image if you bring him in?
At this point it is best for them to keep him 1 more year and see if he can get things under control. You have to respect the way he stood up to the bullies. He has won everywhere he’s been. Auburn is a place you can win. Seems like he got Shanghai’d and Bamboozled from an outside perspective.
What do you think? Too late to turn back or cheaper to keep him?

Honest question: Could our image be any worse?

Ole Miss folk do love them some coach Hugh Freeze.

Freeze is just Gus with the threat of off field scandals or sanctions always on the horizon. Better than Steele, but to spend $40 million on buyouts over 14 months just to be in a slightly worse position than you had been would be some incredible administrative mismanagement.

Right now Auburn is dammed if you do dammed if you don't. Thanks to the backstabbing booster leakage. Won't matter if it's true or not now.

I think truly the Iron Bowl set this in motion, but it was the failure to go for the win when he had the chance. He’d given indications he wasn’t a good fit previously, but when you have your arch rival on the ropes with a chance to finish them and you play it safe you’re toast.
That he seems content to try and coach up guys that weren’t as good (on paper but let’s face it these recruiting analysts are pretty damn good) rather than work to get them would have had the torches and pitchforks out at Bama, Georgia or LSU in a hurry.
Your administration probably won’t take the advice, but cut your losses now.
For purely selfish reasons I hope you keep him.

"We" really don't know anything.
If Auburn had proof that he was banging his subordinate, he'd already have been fired; especially if there was proof that he had a relationship with her in Boise and then used public funds to bring her to Auburn.
If Auburn determines that the situation is completely unworkable from a football standpoint, don't quibble on the buyout. Don't try to manufacture cause. Just pay him and move on.
I raised an eyebrow at the hire, but he's also a big shift from the previous staff, and an adjustment period should be expected.

He stays for the entertainment value alone.

Screwed either way now.

There is no good option. There is only a couple of poor options. They have to pick their poison.
The best option imo would have been to go about business as usual and just lay low another year with Harsin. That option is now unavailable because they wanted him gone so bad they dragged him through the mud. Can’t keep him now. But they’re stupid if they think he’s going to settle. And he’s stupid if he does. I feel like he’s been so damaged he can’t get a decent job after this anyway. He’ll sit tight and not settle. So if auburn tries to fire with cause, he’ll likely drag things out like Pruitt.
Auburns best option is to pay the man, then hire someone for a truck load of money. It’s the only way they’ll get someone decent. They’ll need to come up with 75-100 million guaranteed. And stop making public statements ffs. Shut up and just take care of your shite.
So money is the answer. They will need to spend a shite load of it.

Sure. He beat Alabama twice and almost won the West in 2015.
He also had a 19-21 conference record, had a losing record to Arkansas, and lost TWICE to Vandy.
Hugh Freeze's last two SEC games...after FIVE years at Ole Miss: a 21 point loss to Vandy, and a 35 point arse whipping by Mississippi State at home.
If he's the hot coach Auburn fans want to believe he is, how in the holy hell does shite like that happen? How do you lose to Vandy by three touchdowns in year 5?

Go, but I hope he doesn't.

After this shite storm Auburn will be lucky to hire a really good coach or decent coach till the boosters agree to stop with what they are doing. No coach is gonna want to come to auburn to only be treated like Harsin has been treated. Truth be known, Auburn should have kept Gus at this point. Harsin will not take a settlement for less to leave. If they want Harsin gone it’s gonna cost then $18 million!!!

At this point I don't see how you've done anything other than neuter the man and set him back out there for one more season of shite. If you thought his recruiting this year was average just wait until next year when the 2023 class got to witness all of this. Plus look at the roster. Is them winning more than 6 games next year a good possibility?
