You really hit the nail on the head why everything seems so sucky.

We know where this is headed. It’s going to be a lame end to the season. We caught fire once (2017) on the back of a running back that had insane YAC numbers, and even that season as a whole was kinda bleh with four losses.

Every year since 2014 has been over by this time of the season. We have little to play for and are staring at a miserable Amen Corner and a yawner of a bowl game we probably lose.

Are you saying that just because 1-6 when it matters, 0-6 really if you count seecg in 2017, that we should be upset and not believe?

I can buy that. I can also buy theres a slight chance the team is capable of something.

2017 was a good regular season finish when you beat undefeated and #1 UGA and then #1 undefeated BAMA. good times.

Need to beat Samford and one of the others, then win a bowl game. 10 wins is always satisfying.

I have thought about this a lot since last night.

When we were up by 13, I was thinking, this is the first time in the last few years where we might not lose a game we were supposed to win. No Tenn, No Texas A&M, no mindblowing wasting and losing an W.

But then by the 4th I was like, oh no, here we go again.

I honestly do not know what to make of this team. The Ol looks putrid at times and our calls on 3rd down can drive me insane.

I think Nix has been told to focus so much on keeping his eyes downfield when he rolls out that he does not run when he should at this point.

Our defense is wearing down. We have elite guys, but attrition is taking a toll and that is where we become vulnerable.

I thought our punt return issues were resolved, and then last night happened.

I still think this team has time to become very good, but they need several things to click in less than two weeks.

Call me crazy, but I still think we beat GA.

The biggest problem with the offense is no identity. No flow and not two drives look the same. We are scoring at times just with big plays. Good breaks, etc. Driving the ball down the field has been difficult. Some of that is O Line, some is QB play, some is player mistakes and some is play calling. Its just not flowing.

A lot of player mistakes last night with drops, fumbles , etc. Then lots of crazy calls at times where it seemed like Gus doesnt have confidence in the Offense. We missed 3 field goals last night but they were all long. Would have been nice to make one of them to keep the last drive from being scary.

Ive said for weeks that this is what this offense will be. I dont see it getting any better. We will need some big plays to hang with UGA and our defense to play lights out.

This offense is the offense I hated for years but it could be worse. It just does not seem to know what it is. Look for a big play, take advantage of that. Play defense. That is 2019 Auburn like it or not

Watching live gives you a different perspective. Gus and OL gets a ton a criticism and some warranted. However, at the first sign of pressure Bo bails on the pocket. I watched on 3rd down, and the pocket would look great. If he would step up he would have a few more seconds to read the D. But he always bails to his strong side. Also, we attack the middle, but Bo has problems delivering an accurate pass.

ETA:

I cant explain how open Sal was and Bo wasn't close. Bo is not a good QB. He may evolve into a GOAT, but you can see a raw freshman watching him live.

It always looks more chaoitc to me live. Last night things just looked all over the place at times. We have guys open over the middle on a lot of plays, I just assume Bo is not seeing them.

On the other hand, you can really see the defense go to the ball from above. Very good pursuit all night long. 4 people on every tackle.

On that 3rd down where Bo scrambled and hit Seth, the pocket was great. He looks at his first read then bails. What is weird about this group is they are an elite team that cant get right at QB. DJ looks great live. You can tell he is a RB. Joiner needs to be a hybrid WR/TE. His hands and speed are great.

I agree. We just have to hope we get some big plays.

I have not watched the game on TV yet but from the stadium, looked like the offensive line gave Bo enough time most of the night. He does seem to bail to his left on every scramble. He is much more accurate in the pocket than out of it. Hopefully, that will come with playing time.

You make a lot of good points in this post, but the first sentence is exactly why I’m finally ready to bite the bullet and move on from Gustav.

He made a big deal of taking back the play calling duties starting with the bowl game. Has presumably been making all the decisions regarding player personnel, schemes and game planning. Outside of losing Boobie for a couple of games, has had very good injury luck.

And yet, 9 games into the season, you can still accurately say we have no identity or consistency on offense. If Gus can’t find his arse with both hands under these nearly ideal circumstances, when will he ever?

This offense seems to suffer from a fear of commitment. Decide what we are and commit to it.

I think Gus has viewed this offense as work in progress. On the sidelines, it looks like he treats every possession as a teachable moment for Bo. While every offense should try to progress, we cannot do that, at least to me, unless the offense knows what its identity is.

He never will with this offensive style but I have beat that to death for 5 years. He can not coach this style of offense. He never has and never will.

He made his biggest mistake in 2015 and has never fixed that. It will be his undoing.

I have gone back and forth on this. Im obviously in the minority, but was actually impressed with the scheme and play calling last night. I mean Nix threw almost 50 times. We only went deep a few times (one on a less than ideal 3rd and 6) and worked the middle of the field. That also opened up the run somewhat.

The problem last night was mostly lack of execution, in my opinion. Nix missed some wide open receivers, fumbled the ball, left the pocket when he didn’t need to, etc. We also had some receivers drop a few balls that should have been caught. I’m thinking and hoping that, at least from the QB position, those problems will get corrected with experience.

Here is my bottom line: Gus has hitched his wagon to Bo Nix. He’s not going to be fired this year and his fate is going to be tied to Nix’s development. If he can develop Nix and get us closer to championship level ball (playing for SEC titles, beating our rivals, making the Playoffs) then he’ll be our coach for whomever the next QB is. If he can’t develop Nix and we are a 7-5/8-4 type team, then we’ll fire him and move on.

I am right there with you. I dont really express it on here because our village idiots are so against Gus. Criticism against Gus shouldn't be his play calling or game management. You can talk about our gaps in recruiting, but the plays are working. Bo cant complete the loop.

Exactly. We’re seeing the same demise with Chip Kelly. They both were the premier offensive minds at one time. Now both need to be fired, because they forgot what got them where they are.

I have been supportive of Gus until this season. I know Bo isn't making the throws, and WR are dropping them when made and the OL isn't blocking, etc...I honestly think Gus has done a better job with play calling than the last few years.

My complaint is the same basic problems continue to exist over multiple seasons, with different playersand different coaches...the only constant is Gus. I don't know if it is film prep, practice approach, game plan but we have long stretches of every game where the O is horrible and it has been that way for several years save KJ playing himself into the 2nd round in 2017 when he was healthy. Against elite competition we often keep the game close but you never feel as if the offense can realistically win the game...we pray for a busted coverage or a trick plays to work.

The inability to put Ole Miss down last night wasn't just about frustrating the fan base, it also meant Cord didn't get meaningful snaps and the opportunity to grow the team was wasted. This is another hallmark of Gus' team, wasting the games to develop the younger guys because of a lack of commitment to something that works. But hey, we won!

I wont disagree with that. Both are failing on offense. I think the outside noise caused Gus to change then his ego just would not let him switch back. Plus he is too far in recruiting at this point to change again

I thought when we got Gatewood that we could possibly start to make that move back but unlike you, once I saw Joey play, I just didnt feel like he was what we thought he was. Of course there is no way to know now and it does not look like Gus will go back. It will eventually be his demise. Which is a bad deal in my opinion. I really think Gus can make a very good head coach. It just probably wont be here from now on.
