We can have Petrino (A guy who can hang), so there is no reason to go to a any "B" guy.

After a conversation I had last night I'm led to believe Petrino is just a smokescreen and has no real chance at getting the job. This person isn't connected to Auburn but he is connected in the college football world and knows Sexton personally. His take was Patterson, Fisher and Strong in that order were our top choices that had also shown interest.

Yes I'm serious. Gus was great at scripting the first 20-30 plays but after that his playcalling was average at best.

Draw attention away from the real candidates is the reason he gave me. I hate when other people do this so the he I am referring to is Shannon Terry CEO of 247sports.

I can see that. But it's not like the other candidates haven't been liked just as strongly. If anything not dismissing Petrino earlier just drove a bigger wedge.

No reason to discredit, it just my opinion.

That's a dumb move on Jacobs part, if true. They should have dismissed his name from the start.

This so called "smokescreen" has built alot of support for a Petrino type hire and will blow up in his face, if they fail to get Patterson or Fisher.

IMO here is the problem with hiring Petrino. First off, we already have Petrino baggage from Jetgate. If UT were to hire him, then they would just get slammed for transgressions at Arky and maybe some of his other past. If we hire hire him, then the national media not only has his issues at Arky The Falcons and Louisville to beat us over the head with, but they also get to drag up Jetgate in great detail. I fully expect it to get really nasty if Petrino is hired. We haven't had any positive press in over 4 years. That's a long time.

Smokescreen or not, if Dumpy doesn't get the big name to come on board I would bet Petrino is the fallback hire. It will be put out there that he was the target all along. We will also be told Bo and Pat were put in place to make sure that he indeed has changed and to stress the importance of what it means to be an Auburn man. After the 1st 10 win season, the rest will be forgotten.

Like this is anything new.

Fair or not, this is how Auburn is treated. It doesn't matter what we do, we're seen as dirty. Despite the fact that the NCAA just did a colonoscopy of our program and found nothing, we're guilty in the court of public opinion because we've always been perceived as a dirty program. Trooper Taylor has never been found guilty of committing a major violation, but yet he's viewed as the dirtiest recruiter in the nation because of his image and the way he acts.

So screw what anyone on the outside thinks or wants. We should stick it to them by hiring Petrino and winning 10 games a year. I couldn't care less about "bad press." Screw it.

Won't matter once we start winning.

I relish in the madness it brings from other fanbases

Yeah but does this administration have the balls to take the hits until winning does occur? Jay Jacobs arse is already on the line. How much is he willing ti risk it at this point?

Take the hits for about 4 months until Petrino brings the pain to other teams?

I think Petrino would make our team better, but don't think Auburn wants to risk the image hit we would take. I think they worry about his past more than we think!

I think JJ is more worried about making a big hire than BPs image. BP is more likely a backup hire if we cant get someone like Patterson or Fisher. Even if he is doesnt care about BPs image he knows half the fanbase does but he would still be seen as a big time hire.

In all seriousness though, how many fans/alumni would actually give up their seats and not support the program if Petrino is hired? Not me. A bunch of empty threats IMO.
