Jim Fyffe was from Kentucky... and he endeared himself to auburn more than maybe anyone.

I don’t think being a fan/alum should be a prerequisite at all.

Yeah, I don't need some seasoned professional Joe Schmoe from upstate New York. Give me a guy who loves Auburn. Not going to affect wins and losses or even the bottom line for the university.

Why?
Because I want to hear a genuine excitement when calling a game from someone who loves and cherishes Auburn University. Its not that difficult to understand.

Have you listened to Chris Blair for LSU? IMO he is an excellent play by play announcer...he shows enthusiasm, emotion, and does an excellent job of "painting a picture" with his words.
Good for LSU. Auburn is not LSU. Its why we have Kodi Burns, Travis Williams, Rodney Gardner etc on staff. We hire Auburn

Serious question because I don't know - what was Jim Fyffe's connection to Auburn before becoming the the play by play announcer? All I know that he was a native of Kentucky

I hope that Auburn does the same thing that LSU did 4 years ago when they replaced long time play by play man Jim Hawthorne.

LSU conducted a national search and hired Chris Blair from Georgia Southern. Blair now does radio for LSU football, basketball, and baseball.

Conduct a National Search and find the best person for the job

Could not disagree more with your opinion. RB made you feel it in your veins because he bled blue and orange. Give me the most Auburn man of men to replace him. Rod wasn't shy of calling out ref bullshite either. I don't want Mike Tirico playing it neutral and defending refs.

I was googling this and found an excerpt from a book called "100 things Auburn fans should know and do before they die."

In short he didn't have a connection to Auburn he graduated from UK and had been a diehard Kentucky fan most of his life before coming to Auburn.

In 1979 he had tickets to the Auburn-UK game and burned them because Kentucky was struggling and he couldn't bear to see them lose.

He moved to Birmingham in 1971 and did some broadcasting work for Samford football and did the news before moving to Montgomery to work in TV.

According to the book Jim Fyffe said he was in the right place at the right time as far as getting the Auburn job.

Anyway here's a link to the excerpt from the book that talks about it. 100 things Auburn fans should know and do before they die.(Google Books)

As someone who didn’t attend Auburn, (I married an alum) you couldn’t tell that when you meet me. In fact, some of our friends think that I went to Auburn more than my wife, by the way I act and know about all current Auburn things.

Just saying that Auburn passion can easily be learned. Getting on campus and experiencing multiple football games, attending Auburn weddings, and living inside the city of Auburn for a short time, taught me everything I needed to know. I love Auburn and so can someone else that has never been there before.

Whoever it is will be a professional.

I love Auburn, but I doubt I could provide a radio broadcast of any sport.

A professional broadcaster would be the best choice.

RB was a unique professional who happened to have a life long love of Auburn.

The next professional will see and feel the love of Auburn and return that same love to Auburn. It will take time, but ultimately any of us can be replaced at our jobs. The big loss here is to the Bramblett family. They both likely had 25 to 30 years left on this earth with marriages for their children, birth of their grandchildren, retirement, many holidays and birthdays, etc, will never be the same for their family.

I bet the next broadcaster becomes an Auburn man over time. He will certainly have big shoes to fill.

You can hold a “national“ search and still get the best Auburn man for the job.

The alumni pool is large. Getting an “Auburn Man” doesn’t mean you have to hire some sycophant idiot that has been hanging around Auburn for the last 20 years just waiting for a job.

You want someone with an iconic voice but you also want them to be intelligent and provide good color.

There are multiple situations where you might want to listen to the radio guy versus the talking heads on CBS or ESPN.

Ironic that you chose as your example the guy who did one of my favorite AU play by play calls of all time

Coach Pearl is a perfect example of someone who came in and embodies the AU man. What a terrific representative and cheerleader for Auburn. Find a great braodcaster that knows the game who is passionate about life.

Or Terry Bowden.
