1. Deion Sanders
Gap
2. Lane Kiffin
Big Gap
3. Hugh Freeze
Bigger Gap
4. Matt Rhule
Biggest Gap
5. Dell McGee
I look at Deion and Lane as actually very similar but different. Both will have low floors but in different ways. Deions ceiling will be capped on if he can coach, Lanes will be on if he can recruit with Bama and UGA.
You know Deion is going to have the players, he’ll recruit better than when we had Chizik here. Question will be, can he coach or get enough good coaches in due to his big personality?
Lane will be the best offensively coached team we’ve probably had since early Malzahn and his big question mark will be can get recruit the elite kids enough to pull from Bama and UGA.
I think Deion is the guy to get given where the program is. He’ll get recruits immediately and if he fails the program will at least have the players. He’s going to bring a lot of personality but Bruce Pearl does the exact same!

This is all a bunch of nonsense.
You lose recruits because Auburn isn’t winning.
Winning cures everything. If you win, you get better recruits. If you lose, recruits go elsewhere. Plain and simple.

re: With Bobo out; what does this do for recruiting?
Posted by WarEagleJersey on 11/30/21 at 10:45 am to warcry
It hurts recruiting because there’s no OC at the moment on staff.
When the OC is hired, then it helps recruiting because there will be one on staff again.

“Built rapport with his receivers”??? For real?
What receivers? This team lacks so much talent on the outside and not one specific player was consistent with Bo. I don’t even understand that statement.
Kobe Hudson is not a #1 (decent #2 though if he improves his catching). Demetrius Robertson was meh. Javarrius Johnson is young and unproven. Shed Jackson is a joke, shouldn’t be playing. The TE’s are progressing but not threats.
All of the offensive weapons are lacking in talent or development right now and no wonder C-Will was fired and Bobo was too.

It absolutely IS recruiting. Always is!
Gus (or Garner if you’d like to place blame as he’s the recruiting coordinator) haven’t signed a good DT since Derrick Brown. The DT is a huge part of the 4-2-5 defense.
I felt for so long that this defense was never able to find a replacement for DB, in multiple cycles. T-Will did great at LB and Crime has done very well in secondary, but the DL has really underperformed this year and it’s solely because of recruiting and not finding replacements for Brown, Russell, Davidson.
I love Derrick Hall too. He should be so much better. He just needs some help and he’d put up Mario Holland like numbers.

I can get behind this, very much. Strong offensive mind. Great recruiter.

I cannot understand why Auburn (and fans) aren’t pushing Brent Venables the most. Guy is an elite recruiter, a great defensive mind, and coming from a program that Auburn wishes it was at.
It’s boggling my mind that he isn’t being forced to turn the job down publicly.

The amount of names on some of these lists and almost none have the 2 names that should start and finish the head coaching list (assuming we cannot lure an Urban Meyer):
1. Brent Venables. I know he's been at Clemson for 8 years and has rejected interviewing for every job that has approached him. But the money wagon should start here and force him to say no. This is the #1 of all #1's.
2. Steve Sarkisian. There's a lot that would go into this hiring and the first one would be to make sure he's healthy and not on the sauce. The second would be to make sure he can handle the pressure of playing against Alabama and not with them. The third would be that he's one of the top offensive minds in the country and a great recruiter. This is another no-brainer for me

I'll throw a couple names out to "the base" (No particular order):
1. Steve Sarkisian - OC at Bama. Not just because it would take away from them but because he's a really good coach. That offense hasn't missed a beat. If not for his past drinking problem, he'd be a HC somewhere right now. He's very underrated IMO.
2. Andy Avalos - DC at Oregon. Just look up his history. He's going to be a big name soon. My hesitation with him is if it's too early to take a chance on a guy like this in the SEC.
3. Brent Venables - DC at Clemson - If there's anyone you should just say name a price to, it's him. One of the best coaches and recruiters in the country.
4. Pat Fitzgerald - HC at Northwestern - He seems to really like a school that provides terrible resources and continues to provide results. He's the "proven HC" guy that would bring stability. Not sold on his ability to recruit, which would mean he would have to hire an incredible staff.
SHOT IN THE DARK - Kellen Moore - OC for Cowboys. Not sure he'd ever leave the NFL but he's thrived under 2 NFL coaches. Plus, his life started in college football, I'm curious if he'd ever return.

This OL opening is given to Chad Morris to select (Dustin Fry), then when Morris leaves next year for a HC job, and brings Fry with him, we then hire Ryan Pugh to both openings. Boom.

Obviously you wont get much disagreements with this....
That said, Gus is who he is. He runs an honest and clean program and is loyal to his coaches. Just the way it is. I don't expect any passing game coordinator. I think that Gus thinks the offense can improve as Bo Nix develops. He'll use that "he's not a freshman anymore" line a lot this offseason.

JB Grimes has to go. Need to find a replacement for him. Recruiting has been abysmal.
Otherwise, I expect the whole coaching staff to return. Looking at each one individually, unless presented with a much better offer, the coaches seem to be naturally fit where they are.
Cadillac is in his first year as RB coach. Cant see him going anywhere else this year.
Porter was an RB coach but seems to fit in as the ST coordinator and TE coach here. Might get offers.
Kodi isn't going anywhere without GUS, imo.
Dillingham just got here and hasnt proven anything to warrant a promotion elsewhere.
Steele needs a couple more years for state pension. He has no reason to leave and Auburn wants him.
Gardner is here for life, imo.
T-Will could be lured away but I think his Auburn blood runs deep. Might get a good raise though. DC in waiting, imo.
Wesley McGriff left and then came back. Don't see him doing it again.
Marcus Davidson is young and on a veteran staff, he needs more seasoning.

Depth Chart - 2020
Posted by WarEagleJersey on 12/2/19 at 9:47 am
Wanted to get some discussion about the team moving forward to next year. None of this depth chart includes the 2020 recruiting class.
Offense:
Seniors-
Prince Tega Wanogho
Marquell Harrell
Mike Horton
Jack Driscoll
Kam Martin
Spencer Nigh
Jay Jay Wilson
Kaleb Kim
Sal Canella
Bailey Sharp
Draft-
I don't expect anyone to declare
2020 Offense-
QB- Bo Nix (So)
RB- Boobie Whitlow (R-Jr), DJ Williams (So), Shaun Shivers (Jr)
HB/TE- John Shenker (R-Jr)
WR- Seth Williams (Jr), Anthony Schwartz (Jr)
WR- Eli Stove (Sr), Matthew Hill (R-So), Shedrick Jackson (Jr)
LT- Alec Jackson (R-Jr)
LG- Tashawn Manning (R-Jr)
C- Nick Brahms (R-Jr)
RG- Jalil Irvin (R-Jr)
RT- Brodarius Hamm (R-Jr)
Early Analysis-
This offense is losing the entire offensive line, minus Center. There's a couple JUCO transfers committed which will help the transition, but this OL is going to struggle. It's nice that Auburns schedule opens up pretty easily in the first 5 games, until Georgia (with a new QB), so they will have some time to figure out rapport and lineups.
Bo Nix as a Sophomore will have to improve his consistency throwing the football. He has plenty of receivers and running backs to make plays. Needs to deliver the ball more effectively and efficiently.
Defense:
Seniors-
Derrick Brown
Marlon Davidson
Daniel Thomas
Jeremiah Dinson
Javaris Davis
Draft-
Noah Igbinoghene (Jr: Elite Corner, I think he declares)
Nick Coe (R-SR: High potential but needs more consistency, stays)
KJ Britt (SR: High potential but only one year of film, stays)
2020 Defense-
DE- Nick Coe (R-Sr)
NT- Tyrone Truesdell (Sr), Coynis Miller (Jr)
DE- Derrick Hall (So)
BUCK- Big Cat Bryant (Sr), TD Moultry (Sr)
LB- KJ Britt (Sr), Chandler Wooten (R-Sr)
LB- Owen Pappoe (So), Zakoby McClain (Jr)
CB- Roger McCreary (Jr)
SS- Jamien Sherwood (Jr)
FS- Smoke Monday (Jr)
CB- Christian Tutt (Jr)
Early Analysis-
Obviously losing Brown and Davidson are HUGE to the overall defense. Both 1st round picks, with Brown being a generational player. Big losses to the DL but they return a lot of talent. I think we see more of a rotational line next year (like we saw in 2016/2017).
A lot of players coming back and key players getting another year of experience. The secondary will need most help with Davis and Dinson graduating, and the potential of Igbonoghene leaving early. Holding onto Wesley McGriff and Marcus Woodson will help development.
Special Teams:
K- Anders Carlson (R-Jr)
P- Aaron Siposs (Sr)
LS- Bill Taylor (R-Jr)
PR- Christian Tutt (Jr)
KR- Shaun Shivers (Jr)
Early Analysis-
Carlsen had a great Iron Bowl and the hope can only be that he keeps that confidence into next year. Would like to see him develop more as a Kickoff specialist too. I think he struggled there this year.
Siposs has been great, cant complain at all about his performance thus far.
Id like to see Anthony Schwartz more on kickoff return. Christian Tutt needs to hold onto the football if hes going to stay at PR.

This was a brilliant formation.
Siposs at WR and Bo under center. Auburn was trying to keep Waddle off the field. IF he ever got off field, I guarantee Auburn would have shifted Siposs to punt it deep.
Pure brilliance by Larry Porter and Gus

You do realize that there are plenty of examples of coaches that went from coordinator to HC with great success, right?
Dabo Sweeney
Dan Mullen
James Franklin
Lincoln Riley
Kirby Smart
Mike Gundy
Pat Fizgerald
Tom Herman
List can go on and on...
What you want to see in a potential coaching hire is a few things:
1. Can you recruit? Are you likeable?
-Recruiting is where success begins in CFB.
2. Are you running a system that works in CFB?
-Offense or defense, is your system successful.
3. Are you working under a coach that runs a respected program?
-The best coaches have the best coordinators and those coordinators pick up great wisdom in these programs.
4. Have you faced adversity?
-Have you had to face adversity in your coaching career where you were knocked out but came back up swinging.

Im not here to say Bill Clark isnt a good football coach, he is.
But this is Auburn University. A highly respected and nationally competitive school. We should be able to pick a coach with much better credentials and experience then Bill Clark.
If Gus is let go (I dont think he will be) then we should be on the top of coaching candidate hires.
And that lists, has to start with:
Brent Venables

The real question should be:
"What can Bo do that will help Bo on Saturday"
Here's what I think he can do better week-after-week:
Stay in the pocket, trust the pocket will be there.
Identify a blitz and get rid of the football
Read the defense quicker
Run north, no more east and west

The answer is KJ Britt for me.
The linebackers have been a pretty stable group for the last few year (Thank you T-Will) but I don't think we've seen a LBer like this one. KJ is just as instinctive as Deshaun Davis was, and twice the athlete of Davis.
I think he's got it all. Really excited about his future.

"Winning despite Bo" is about as dumb a comment one can make, having watched the first 4 games.
One cannot say:
Bo is a TRUE FRESHMAN
Playing the HARDEST schedule in the country
NOT turning the ball over
And still feel:
Bo stinks
This team is winning BECAUSE OF his ability to run the zone read, not turn the ball over, and have a self confidence that is felt among the entire team. This team is playing AS A TEAM. Everyone doing something to help.
