Got a call yesterday afternoon from my mom that my cousin had passed away in a freak kayaking accident in Chattanooga yesterday. He was 31. He was a very experienced kayaker (just raced in the Green Race), but had never went out on this part of the river. He called his mom yesterday morning to let her know they were going out after the rains to get some runs in. He got trapped under a log and they were not able to pull him out as the currents were too strong. He was with his girlfriend and another friend. If you could, please keep my family in your thoughts..we are all just distraught. He was my closest cousin in age and one always down for the adventure. He will be sorely missed.

Sorry for your loss. Too young.

Walt Blackadar (spelling?) was the greatest whitewater guy in the world and died in the water.

At least your cousin was doing something he enjoyed.

Prayers for all who loved him.

Dang man. That’s tragic.

That’s why I’m skiddish about doing stuff like that.

If an experienced kayaker can die, there is no way in hell my inexperienced arse is going to do it. Much less bring my family with. Calm waters are good waters.

I'm sorry for your loss man. I can't imagine how those that were there are feeling. It is a helpless feeling being right there and unable to do anything to help.

I had a friend almost die in those same circumstances, the rivers are unpredictable after rains, dangers are hidden. I had a pin happen to me and it made give up whitewater.

So, so sorry to hear about your loss, especially at this time of the year. Tomorrow is never, ever a given for any of us and it may sounds cliche, but cherish each day we have, with our friends, with our family and loved ones. Hug them, call them, tell them so. As the "black sheep" in my family, I am still working on the prayer / religion / God thing. Daily. But I will have you and your family in my thoughts, and my heart hurts and will continue to hurt for you and your family, again and especially now during the holiday season. Silver lining is that this terrible event will hopefully pull you and family closer together than ever. My heart hurts with you and yours. Chin up, and one day at a time Zach. Time will help, and right now, that may be the hardest part. Please know that even this can one complete mess of a message board, for the most part, everyone posting here are Auburn people, and when it really matters, like now, may you find some peace and support from our Auburn Family. War Eagle. My name is John, born and raised in Auburn, C/O '93, Zoology. Chin up, bro.

Hate to hear this and so sorry for your loss.

Only had a little personal one on one with him (name withheld) but it was because he was such a respected person as well as a boater. We had lots of mutual friends and it was precisely because he was such a stand up guy, who was respected by all that came in contact with him. Whitewater paddlers tend to be a close-knit group and the karma you live with is passed along as your calling card, and he had a very good one which is why we met at all.

Again, if it's any condolences you/we/us lost one of the good guys.
