I’m just for a more rational pay package.
Make it where results determine total compensation.
A 3 million dollar base with escalators for division, conference, and national titles.
For a nattie, 10 million total comp.
For a conference, 7 million
For a division, 5 million.
For 8-5, 3 million.
I would love to see a package like that for all coaches. It would make more sense. But there is no way a agent will let coaches start to fall in that category. Think about it. Gus and his agent were brilliant to do what they did. Knowing Auburn like they do and how up and down the administration and fans are, they made it almost impossible for him to be out of work for a few years without the buyout.
A structure like you recommended would need some type of guarantee for coaches before they would all buy in to that
But I like it

I like incentive based contacts for coaches, earn your pay!

My point is why would someone want the Oregon coach at Auburn? Its just a repeat of Gus. A inexperienced head coaching project.
His first HC job was in 2007, the year after Gustav's first ever college coaching job at Arky.
Despite being 5 years younger than GM, Cristobal has more years as an assistant (11 to 6) and as an HC (9 to 8).
quote:Don't recall Herbert throwing any interceptions in that game. Perhaps we DO need to discuss it further, since you are remembering things that didn't happen.
And if you dont think his performance in the first game lost that game to us, there is no need to discuss it further. He had a opportunity to run the clock out and had his QB throwing the ball down field to get intercepted.

I think a solid buy-out is a good trade off for an incentive-based salary. Something like 75% base salary for entirety of contract (base buy out would be the same in year 5 as year 1 and would probably be in the 8-10m range) + a rolling average of your earned incentives in the last 3 years.
Buying out a coach with 3m/year base pay with a 5 year contract who won the SEC 3 years ago but nothing since would be 15.25m.
Without any incentives for the coach who accomplished nothing in the buy out, it would be 11m, and you only paid them 3m/year.
Eta:. Buyout should be a % of incentives, not an average, but other than that

I liked what Oklahoma did with Stoops a few years back - if you are still our HC on a certain agreed upon date you get a one-time bonus. In Stoops' case it was $6 million.
Gives the HC an incentive to a)perform up to expectations and 2)not shop around for other opportunities.

That's interesting. Obviously if youre still there by the date, you're meeting expectations, and as you said, gives the school leverage against sexton being sexton.

Is Brent Venables a possible option or are we above hiring coordinators especially ones familiar with the southeast?

If he took over that program with a decent foundation to start he’d be ok, but if it requires him to start completely over that program is fricked. Gus doesn’t know how to rebuild a program.

Has no desire to be a head coach according to those in the know.

That’s crazy. He’s a proven commodity at DC. He can always fall back to that if things didn’t work out. But honestly I’m all ears if we tried to gauge some interest in Baltimore’s OC. I don’t know if he’d fit in with us or college football at all, but that offense in Sunday looked like ours from 2010.

Why? If the dude enjoys being a DC and doesn't want to run an entire program and deal with the crap that comes with that, why is that crazy?

Doesn't he make like 2.2-2.5M a year? He probably enjoys living in Clemson, single and no children. He doesn't have to deal with all the political BS.

SIAP but leaving this post here from the Bunker...

If Gus splits UGA and Bama, don't be surprised if he survives all the way through 2021
For all the fretting over who we lose next year, the schedule actually set up nicely:
Sept. 5: vs. Alcorn State
Sept. 12: vs. North Carolina (in Atlanta)
Sept. 19: at Ole Miss
Sept. 26: vs. Southern Miss
Oct. 3: vs. Kentucky
Not a stretch to say we're 5-0 at this juncture.
Oct. 10: at Georgia
Oct. 17: vs. Texas A&M
Oct. 31: at Mississippi State
Nov. 7: vs. Arkansas
Nov. 14: vs. UMASS
Could conceivably go 4-1 in this stretch. Meaning we would be 9-1 headed into...
Nov. 21: vs. LSU
Nov. 28: at Alabama
With Burrow gone, at home, it's not out of the realm that we finally win a game over LSU. But even so, there's no way he'd get fired at this point unless we got smoked in these games.

quote:That looks like a trap game to me. If our OL is as bad as most here seem to think, I could easily see us stumbling to a win vs Alcorn State game on talent alone, then laying an egg on offense against the Mack Attack.
Sept. 12: vs. North Carolina (in Atlanta)
But my prediction for 2020, not knowing a damn thing about our team or our opponents, is that we will go 7-5, maybe 8-4 if we get some breaks. Because that's what we do.

Meh.
The last few years we have been pretty good at fricking North Carolina in several regards. :)

More concerned about the DL honestly

His salary would be double what he currently makes at minimum. Just my opinion

Unfortunately, fine to good is a big dropoff from what we have this year
