By the way; another fun fact: the PAC12 is in financial shambles. The whole thing with Phil Knight and Oregon is completely overblown. They have money, but its not this bottomless pit wherein they can just throw whatever they want at him. None of the PAC12 schools are as financially stable as an SEC school like Auburn when it comes to athletics. Yes, Oregon is trying to extend Cristobal. But why was his salary a paltry $2.7 mill to begin with? Go look at their last three coaches - none of them made as much money as you'd think "Nike Money" would suggest. Did you know that Chip Kelly during his run of dominance wasn't even the highest paid coach in the conference? Lane Kiffin made more at USC than Oregon was paying Kelly.
I wouldn't be so sure to conclude that Oregon can or will match or beat our best offer. They haven't shown anything in their history of hiring coaches recently to suggest that they are on the SEC level of money. There is a LOT of reason as to why Cristobal would, and is, interested in this job.

Man, I know people are going to laugh at this comment but I dont think the money is going to be the deciding factor. Now I know its a hugely important thing but is there really a difference in 4 million or 6 million to these guys?
I think Mario coming to Auburn or staying at Oregon will come down to what he wants to do. I dont think the bidding war, if there is one, will be the deciding factor
Dude is going to make millions and millions in his lifetime. A few mil right now is not going to stop him from staying where he is if that is where he wants to coach

When reality is next years team is fairly loaded with experience. Do we keep enough talent? Not sure but like I said should be preseason number 2 in the west and probably around 12th in the nation.
I think we can be a good team too, the key is we HAVE to have an OC or HC/OC who brings an offensive scheme that is consistently productive.
In this day the teams that are at the top ALL have prolific offenses. Saban even alluded to his team, after years of having a power run game and a QB that just manages the offense, he agreed that he had to change and produce more offense if he was going to be able to win the big ones.
We have to find that same offensive coach...That is just as much a key as who the HC is...IMO

There you are. I have missed making fun of you.
Go ahead and bring it. Im just enjoying the melt after just two days with no coach. Been fun watching the false info, stupid coaching choices, total melt downs over the first two and just basic dumfrickery that goes on every time Auburn tries to hire a new coach.
I have checked with my sauces and I truely believe MC is the 1st choice. I have a feeling he is staying at Oregon but I think he is the first choice.
There are some other guys out there that could work but I dont believe it will be Freeze, Steele or the Lane train. Probably one of these young guys who had done well in the CSA or Sunbelt. Should be fun

Welcome back Lanier. Been wanting your thoughts on slimeball Steele cozying up to boosters behind Gus’s back for a couple years while being sheltered by SEC RANT/ AUFAMILY fans from any criticism whatsoever. But Gus herp derp!

Because they didn't need to pay him more than that?

He's going to get paid either way, but he would absolutely prefer to be in the South. For obvious reasons. He's a Cuban-American from South Florida coaching in Eugene, Oregon for fricks sakes. I've also heard that his wife's family is in Georgia I believe - either way he's a Southern football boy who understands where the best coaches, talent, and resources are. Its not at Oregon. The PAC12 has fallen back even further from the SEC in terms of football.

I think I am gonna go with bad sauces on that one. I mean, it is Auburn but that would be a stretch for them even.
I honestly thought they had someone locked down by the timing of the Gus boot. I did talk to someone that I know gets good info and he said MC was the guy they wanted.
My thoughts were that it seems kinda odd to pay 21 million with the possibility of 30 million dollars this year to go coach shopping. I felt like they had someone in mind and it was AU86's guy
But please, you guys continue on. Its been entertaining.. Cant wait till Patrick Nix's name gets thrown in there

Ok, we have made it three days without that name being thrown out by our nutty fans and there you go. It has been said twice now, don't say it again.

It sounds ridiculous that we are reckless with the buyout but tight purse with the replacement. Hiring from within the same regime is awful...

I dont post a lot but, why do people in my area seriously think Auburn will hire Steele because "they something in place for next year?" That is completely dumb imo. Why fire GM and bring up KS for head coach for a year and i have heard maybe even 2. That has got to be just some complete bs could someone explain why we would even consider this unless like they said it is to recoup some money for the "big" hire which i think would be total bs and wreck our program even if it was for 1 season
Posted on 12/15/20 at 11:01 am to MontyTiger
Why hire him now when there’s no competition for other legit head coaches? The floodgates likely open next year in regard to coaching positions

It makes no sense because it would be senseless. If we were looking to get a "Big Name" in 2021, you would have kept Gus for another year thereby saving money on his buy-out, keeping the program stable, and not simply wasting a year.
I cracked a bit last night, but I legitimately believe the Steele stuff is just misdirection and the only way he is hired is if 5 other people say no - which could happen, and if it does, then that's just where we are as a program.
But I dont buy that right now.
