I thought you were talking about Bryan Harsin for a second. Either way, I've seen that movie before and how it ends. At least we could reuse this thread title again in a few years.

Again, name someone out there who is a better choice.
Personally I would make Kiffin, Stoops, BOB, Dykes and even Deion all say no before I'd consider Rhule. His one good season at Baylor even though it was a turn around job isn't enough for me. That 2019 Baylor schedule was pretty bad.

He was the first Temple head coach to win 10+ games since 1979, and the only coach in that program's entire history to do it two-years in a row. In 2015 his Temple team lost to #9 Notre Dame by 4 points and beat Penn State by 17. The following year they lost by 7 points on the road to a Penn State team that finished the season ranked #7 and won the Big Ten title.
Pretty much all of the best players from last year's 11-win Baylor team were recruited and signed by Rhule, not Dave Aranda.

Have you looked at that schedule from that 11 win Baylor team? It was weak af.
Smells like another Scott Frost or Mel Tucker to me.

Dude. You may not want him, that's fine. Baylor was on the brink of going away. He recruited like a madman for them and won 11 games. Selling that program to mommas after what they did is impressive enough.

See that's how opinions work. We all gonna have our own. Personally I think Auburn is worthy of a coach with a more established track record and after the most recent debacle I'd like for him to have some history in the region.

Is this a wishlist or do you have a candidate in mind who fits your fantasy criteria?

Urban Meyer. Nick Saban. Obviously.

It is literally what I said it was. A list of coaches I would make say no first.

Deion or bust people trashing Rhule because they don't think he can recruit the South is one thing
Saying we don't want him because he doesn't have signature wins - while touting a guy whose signature wins are like 12 points over Alabama State - is something else entirely.

Stoops
63-55. 30-47 in the SEC. I mean he’s at UK so I don’t expect a stellar record but still. What do you think our ceiling is if we hire Stoops? To me, this is a floor is high but ceiling is low hire which I view as settling. And if we wanted that I don’t know why we don’t keep Malzahn around.
quote:
Dykes
22-15 at La Tech
19-30 at Cal
30-18 at SMU
5-0 at TCU
I mean if anything screamed Scott Frost/Mel Tucker I think it’d be this guy. The only reason he’s even a candidate is his half season at TCU.

BOB
15-9 at Penn State. Good record given the situation. Lot of NFL experience obviously but his offenses do not impress at Alabama. Talent is the only reason they’re winning. Will he recruit? Has he ever recruited? I don’t really know what I’m getting out of him. Seems like another floor is high ceiling is low guy.

Sorry I should have been more clear. I meant Bob Stoops. He's only 62 so he has at least 6 years coaching left in him so I'd make him say no.
Mark Stoops should never leave Kentucky. Make plenty of money and 8-4 and occasional 9-3 is enough to make him a hero there.

His last stint was literally in the area. IN THE NFL. He walks into any house and people knows who he is. If you don't want him because he has no rings, that is fine. Don't like his O? Okay. He is absolutely respected in the pro community and recruits know him. He has a proven track record of taking absolute disasters and winning 10 games.

This is one of many reasons Harsin failed.
The perpetuation of the bs narrative our PTB get too involved is so tiresome and fake. However, there are politics in every single organization out there. Any competent leader has to know how to navigate the politics. You don’t bow down to some idiot executive or booster, but you sure as shite better have the soft skills to navigate a conversation with them and allow them to feel like they are being heard. Politics are the worst to deal with in many companies, but they exist and you better at least try to play the game whether it’s complete bs or not.

Let's face it, every HC we are considering will be a crapshoot.
This. There are no "sure fire" coaches out there. Just look around the country. Venables just got beat 49-0 by Texas. Brian Kelly is disappointing so far. Jimbo on hot seat. Heupel has TN humming and almost no one saw that coming. You just can never tell what's going to happen.
At least Matt Rhule has coached at all levels and knows what it takes to win in both college and NFL. Having an ex NFL coach is always a plus because he can sell that to croots.
Not saying he is my first choice, but I don't see anything really that much better. Plus Rhule has no buyout so he can be had for free.

I agree that someone who has coached in the NFL is intriguing. He basically was coaching all star college players against all star colleges players every game.

Plus Rhule is apparently owed $40 million on his Panthers contract. So he is going to be living the high-life even if AU hires him for $1 a year.
It's pretty lucrative for AU and other schools. No buyout to pay. He is super wealthy so he probably wouldn't "Sexton" us to death.
